Livewell Cooler

Featured Replies

With all the hot temps lately and having to add ice to the livewells, I wondered if anybody had tried to add a thermoelectric cooler to their livewells? I've looked at ones for aquariums. They are a little expensive, but operate off 12vdc and have about 50 Watts of cooling power. I don't know how well this would do in a livewell at 90*, but it will cool 10 gallons of water 6-8*. I think I might try one in a portable cooler, fill it up, close the lid a see what it would do. Maybe add a small pump for water flow around the probe. I was looking at this unit. http://www.coolworksinc.com/IPAC-50Manual10-28-03.pdf In any case, I would like to hear about your experience if anyone has tried it. Thanks.

The only possible problem I can forsee is what will 50 watts do to the battery. Sounds like a good idea but, a zonked battery could end the trip.

Personally, I use the blue powder that keeps fish alive from BPS.  I also will buy a block of ice, not crushed ice and put it in the livewell.  It lasts a lot longer, and you can buy a lot of ice for what that device would cost.   Or, pump fresh water in quite frequently.

I just run my live wells all day on manuel and I don't have any problems. :o

50 watts of power and the battery????

Trolling motor equate to roughly one watt per pound of thrust...( actually number is .87 or something like that)...

my worry would be that with only 50 watts of power it would run too much to cool the water. There is a way to do a BTU conversion from wattage...and it takes a certian amount of BTU to cool one gallon one degree...

but good lord for the life of me I cannot remember the formula for it.

If I had my "pocket pal" book home with me I could look it up...

someone on here will read this and know it off the top of their head.

then you can calculate how much the thing would run and the risk to your battery life.

50 watts does not seem like alot.

The guys are right...ice is much cheaper...

I freeze a half filled two liter bottle.
