crankbait sizing ?

Featured Replies

New guy, looking for more information.

So I'm working on building my tackle. I've been reading about different squarebill crankbaits and I see one in particular by Berkley the Pitbull. It comes in multiple colors but 3 different sizes.

3.5 depth 1/4oz

5.5 depth 3/8oz

7.5 depth 5/8oz

My first question is, if you were only going to buy one since I'm starting out wouldn't the 7.5 cover all the depths?

The next question is, since I know I'm wanting to get a variety of colors would it be better to get a variety of colors in different sizes or go really crazy and get multiple colors in multiple sizes?

Thank you for help/tips/suggestions.

In looking over the Pitbulls, it seems they're like the Rapala DTs - designed to run at a certain depth, or a select range. The 5.5 runs in the 3'-6' depth range according to reviews, so I think the 3.5 would run in the 2'-4' range and the 7.5 in the 5'-8' range (guesses on the latter two models)

I would get a selection of models and colors - sometimes the fish are shallower and sometimes deeper. With a range selection, you'll cover all the depth ranges.

Depends on how you like to fish and how technical you get with a specific presentation like cranks. Sure the 7.5 will probably work for a lot of shallow cover but at times the bass will be shallower and you would have to slow the retrieve greatly for the bait to run correctly. Which in turn might not get the same reaction from the bass. Buy one and fish it in your area and see if your body of water and fishing style requires more fine tuning. Hopefully that makes sense

As for color you can go as simple or as complex as you like. My advice is to pick one shad color and one craw color and maybe one chartreuse black back for muddy water and be done

If you are looking for a crankbait to cover all of you're depths go with a lipless crankbait. You can fish it from 6 inches to 50 feet deep or deeper. If you are from the bank is suggest 1/2 ounce size. Red Craw, shad, chrome, gold, and bluegill patterns.

Thank you sir, I'm mostly from the bank, this helps me get started. :D
