should i change my own staTOR

Featured Replies

Stator went bad on my 90 hp mercury motor.  Is this something you caN CHANGE YOURSELF OR SHOULD I TAKE IT TO THE SHOP

Depends on how handy you are with a wrench. I did my 175 Mariner and didn't have much trouble. I needed a special flywheel puller (bought on Ebay) and a flywheel strap or holding tool. I fabricated my own strap from an old strap wrench and fan belt. A good manual is a must for any motor project you are unfamiliar with. Stators aren't cheap either so be sure you need one first!! You don't say how you determined that you need one. A manual will have trouble shooting tips on that too.

I used to work for a out door power equipment dealership and used to tell people that asked that question, "if you have to ask, you probally shouldn't do it yourself"

They aren't really tricky, but you do need some specialized tools. Make sure you need a stator and it's not something dumb like a bad diode in the line before you dive into it.

My better judgement prevailed and it goes in the shop tomorrow ,after I fish an all electric lake in the morning. ;)
