Recommendations - casting rod for jigs and spinnerbaits

Featured Replies

I just bought a 7ft Dobyns Champion MH/MF crankbait rod. I havent used it yet, but maybe I should have bought the Fury for cranks, and Champion for jigs and spinnerbaits. How light of crankbaits do you think I can throw on this rod? Im new to MH, and it feels pretty stout.

Is the MH/F a good choice for jigs and spinnerbaits from maybe 3/8 to 5/8 or 3/4 max?

Is the Fury MH/F a good rod for this use? Im also looking at the Champion still or the Daiwa Tatula, but Im not familair w the Daiwa and how their MH compares to Dobyns. The Avid X goes up to 1oz, but that rod may be to stiff for my lighter baits, Im not sure. There are some good sales right now, and this is the last rod Im buying for a while.

Im also thinking of trying the 68 instead of 7ft.

I'm no expert but I throw jigs and spinnerbaits on a MH/Fast St Croix Mojo Bass.

I also throw smaller spinnerbaits on a Med/Mod rod but wouldn't hesitate to throw them on the above rod also.

Med/Heavy fast is excellent for those lures and weights.  Dobyns rods will be a bit more moderate than the Tatula rods (Original version), which is honestly just a matter of preference.  Either would do great.

The more I think about this, the more I wonder if I should be getting a M/F rather than a MH. I know the MH is said to be very versatile, but Im also looking to just GET INTO using my casting setups more, these are my first casting setups. I dont really use heavy baits much, and am a little worried about casting lighter 3/8 oz baits on a MH. I have no issues buying another rod later if I find the need to throw heavier baits.

I dont fish much cover for jigs and spinnerbaits, mostly rocks and flats and weed edges.

I got a heck of a deal on the Avid X in either a M/F or MH/F, and Ive read their MH is pretty stout.

For spinning rods, I ALWAYS grab the ML over a Medium when fishing in between weights, I just like them more.

Dobyns rods run light ild call there mh a medium mh or medium heavy light if that makes sense. Look more at lure weight range then anything and try to stay in the middle. But at the same time I don't feel all these to be 100% true either.  Every company has their own set of standards.  Old say in my own experiences max on that rod would be about 1/2 oz by the time u add a trailer. Not that it can't throw 3/4 oz jigs there are just better tools for the job.  As far as crank baits the 704cb runs very light I'm pretty sure it's the 704 cb what ever number there mh is I personally didn't care to much for throwing cranks on it but it found a home as a dedicated Jerk bait rod in my lineup.  I throw from 1/4-5/8 oz jerks on that rod.

I tried out my Dobyns Champion in the yard last night. Its the 705CB 7ft MH/MF.

I was casting 1/2 oz down to just under 3/8oz w no issues casting to about 35-38 yards, with my yard caster black max reel. Im new to casting rod and reels but I seemed to pick it up ok. I have no issues w the 3/8oz on that Dobyns MH.

Some people (like above comment) say the Dobyns runs a bit light, and the SCroix a bit heavy, SO how would the AVID M compared to the Dobyns MH? Ive only held the StCroix MH, and it "seemed" way too stout for my uses.

What rod for 3/8 to 1/2 mainly, and some 5/8? I can buy a M and a MH if needed, but would prefer one rod if possible.

The problem is I ordered the Avid X for only $131 brand new on a mistake sale, and they never go on sale, and if I return that nobody wins haha. The Dobyns I would just wait for a sale.

I personally love tossing jigs and spinnerbaits on my Dobyns Fury 703c, but it is pretty light.(I have not flipped it into mats though) It’s also sensitive enough to throw weightless senkos for comparison. I like the sensitivity and the versatility of it, but definitely fish’s light.

I was out a few days ago casting 3/8 oz weights with a St Croix Avid X 6'6 Mh-f and a Daiwa Tatula with 50lb braid. Had no problems at all casting a good distance from the bank, I estimated an honest 45 yards. I really like the feel of the avid x personally, but I hear great things about dobyns too.

Maybe a medium power st Croix would fit what your looking for. But I like the added versatility of a MH-F. Like I said it can throw the lighter stuff just fine.

I have the 7'mh-f avid (reg avid, i refuse to use the x or any micro eye rod) and use 3/8 or 1/2 jigs the vast majority of the time with it and no problems, even without trailers. Its a really good jig rod. For my taste its a lil stiff for spinnerbaits though. I prefer more of a mod-fast action for spinnerbaits, that dobyns you have would be perfect to me.

Im planning on trying some spinnerbaits on the champion for sure, just to see. Hopefully it works.

I noticed the St Croix MH goes up to 1oz, where other MH like Dobyns, Fenwick, MH only goes up to 3/4. Id like to find them in person to compare...

Any medium heavy fast will do you well for spinnerbaits.

To be honest with you, I only own 1 medium power rod and it never leaves the house. You don't need to load a rod way up to get a good cast out of it. What little you might lose in casting distance with lighter baits will make up for itself the first time you lean way back and rip a bass out of grass and bring half the grass with you. With a good reel and good line the little bit a MH rod will load up on casting will be enough. I cast weightless senkos on a 7'2" MH/F all day. Sure I could cast further with a M/M or an M/F but then I couldn't tie on a MVMT 80 squarebill and throw it in the brush, or a big lipless and throw it in the grass.
