Im almost positive Id like the 702 or 732, maybe the 733 is the one I need to try. My go to medium rod surprises some people but its a several years old Fenwick Elite Tech Bass 7'MF. Its just comfy and works. The ETB or ETW 69MLXF that everyone used to rave about just felt super whippy to me, although I never fished one so maybe not fair.

Not sure if this is true, but seems widely accepted that St Croix rods in general or at least the LTs are stiffer than other companies. Is that also true when compared to Dobyns? I dont love my St Croix mediums as I dont often throw baits that need it. So I guess what Im asking is if a Dobyns Medium is lighter than a St Croix Medium?

The only Dobyns rod I have is the crankbait casting rod and I love it. Barely use it, but I love it. My next favorites are 2 of my StC Legends 7ft MLF spinning and LTBass 610 MLXF for dropshots. If I just want a new Dobyns rod to play with that most people really like, which one should it be? Not concerned if it overlaps with above rods, just want one of the best "spinning" rods they have to offer around 7ft if possible.

I realize this thread is a year old, but reading through it since I had the same question. Im surprised all the responses of watermelon in clear water. In clear water I fish much more natural colors like goby, perch or similar. Anyone else the same?

So my new plan for this year fishing new water is to use faster moving baits on new spots. Crankbaits, spinnerbaits and small swimbaits like Keitech 4" are what I plan on throwing at any new spots Im fishing. Are those the right baits? How long do you go before moving? Do the searchbaits usually produce at least 1-2 fish? Some spots Im not sure if I should start with something more subtle if I think there are fish there. Once I catch a couple on those and no more, then I plan to switch. Then I plan to use a dropshot, shakeyheads, tubes and senkos to pick off a few more, or some ribworms in the current. How long to you try to catch a few more with slower baits before moving? Any tips to this are appreciated. I seem to fish a lot of bigwater sections of water as well during the year and searching really seems to be a big part of it. Im usually fishing SM and walleye.

I have a Shimano FK 3000, and want to switch the reel handle to a 2500 style, not the power handle or whatever it came with. Will a handle from a Ci4 work? Other reels?

I scanned most of the replies but I agree with whats been said. When I used a more moderate action rod when i started, and a 3/8 to 1/2 oz weight, it was much easier to load up the rod to cast. I just learned the baitcasting techniques last season, but man its so much for after being all spinning for 30 years. A moderate fast rod or even a fast from maybe Dobyns should be plenty easy to load up with a weight in the mid range for that rod or slightly higher. I dont mean easy, if you are just learning, just gotta practice with a forgiving setup with some give to the rod.

The other rod has 12lb Tatsu. Do you think even with Tatsu it would be not great handling? I have sunline supernatural mono 12lb on my champion and I couldnt ask for anything better. Im assuming the 12lb Tatsu wont handle as good as the mono, but I really dont know. I already have the Power pro in 30lb that I was going to exchange for 40lb, but most people here seem to be saying to just run the 30lb. As for a leader, the 12lb tatsu I have says .285mm dia and the power pro 30lb is .280mm dia. Seems like a good match. Not sure how important that is, but doesnt get much closer than that.

Since you replied quoting me above, I assume you are referring to me. Nobody said anything bad to me, nor did I. I was simply referring to someone else that was throwing insults to another person on here, about the find a new hobby comments...and to clarify IT WAS NOT a comment from A-Jay... As for the opposing opinons, Im all for it. Thats what Im here for is to hear all opinions. Thats not what the issue was.

Uh no, I was commenting to a particular person, who told someone else not me, to give up fishing and go fly a remote control airplane. And that no they probably couldnt handle that. Thats pretty lame to say to someone on a fishing forum that shares the same interests. Go ahead tell me to move on, whatever. I was defending someone else not myself, for someone insulting them. Same here. Ive also caught fish on full cork vs split, 1 piece rods vs 2, junk rings vs good sic rings, 66 vs 7ft. Its just a preference for some people, to have something balance well. I even like pretty fishing rods more than ugly ones. Im pretty new on here and might seem new, but ive been fishing for 30+ years and maybe wasnt doing all things the "right" way, but I still caught thousands of fish. Enjoying it is the most important to me. That just proves were all different. Im also an ME engineer and I find the balance threads useful haha. I may be an outlier as to why it matters though.

I can give my example of why it might matter. I HAD to switch and learn baitcasters after I tried one and felt how much better of an angle my wrist was in. A baitcaster is a FAR BETTER angle for my wrist (especially palming the reel)w 3 surgeries and pins and wires, so that was a huge improvement. Now, Im realizing that lets say a 1oz tipheavy feel is experienced. You will feel that when holding the rod, reeling the bait, working the bait on bottom, AND you get the weight of the bait. My wrist can handle weight, but it doesnt like the palm facing inward and hand forced downward stress. Its the angle mostly thats bad. One of my favorite baits is heavy spinnerbaits, but I cant even fish them anymore. Been this way since I injured my wrists at 19 years old. The wrist is at an angle, stresses the ligaments and all the hardware in my joint and I have to START with the best balance possible. For me, Im willing to bet overall weight might help too, but im not loaded with cash so I just do the best I can. I can handle some harassing and stuff its no big deal its just the internet, but I really didnt get why this topic caused some of those comments. We really should not be harassing or insulting others and telling them to give up fishing. If you dont care about balance then move along, right? Thats what I do with every thread title that doesnt interest me.

You dont seem to understand everyone is different or have different preferences. At 38 years old, I can bench my body weight ten times still for reference, and ride 30 minute motos twice a week on an MX track. Its not about not being strong enough, sometimes there are other circumstances. Everyone is different. Thanks for the plane idea.... Maybe those that actually get fatigued dont want to fly an RC plane. Way to chase them off a FISHING forum.

Its been a long while since I took statics, so ill rely on simple concepts, but I dont see how the balance would be any different at all with the reel up or down. The load is applied at the same point either way, with the same force so it shouldnt be different upside down or not when trying to find the actual balance point. Nice. Good example thanks for sharing. Ill have to try that on a few of my combos.

Im with you. The reason I care so much is becasue I broke both wrists racing motocross 15 years ago and have had 3 surguries on each since then. If someone wants balance and will notice, I believe it will be me. Game changer for me when it comes to fishing more than 10 minutes.

Yes without a reel. I thought this forum was different, that people talk about what stuff they like and dont like, without telling other people its useless and doesnt matter. This seems to be a sensitive topic to some for reasons unknown to me.... I for one, seem to USE rods that are my favorite performing, and favorite FEELING combos I have. For example, my Champion 705CB balances very well compared to some similar price rods. I use the same Fuego CTs on all of my casting rods, so the reel doesnt matter much. If you have a consistent grip on all your reels, the balance point without reel is still a good starting reference, it doesnt need to be more complicated than that. I like rods that balance closer to my hand. They are more fun. They dont catch more fish, win trophies, or give me more vacation days. I just like them better.

After discussing this a few weeks back, I went back through my rods, and how I hold them. I also measured quite a few to get the distance from the trigger to the balance point on some dobyns fury, champions, avid x, aetos, and more. I was a bit surprised, but it translated well into what I'm feeling in the rod when fishing. Just an example, my 705cb was 7 inches, my 7mf avid x was 11.5 inches. Spinning rods would be a little less scientific just due to the many different holds people use.

I have some st croix legends, so not that I need glx or nrx's, but I do want to compare. I just ordered a Legend walleye 7ft MLF and wanted to order an average medium roughly 7ft. I have been wanting to try an NRX, but I need a sale to justify it. I'm currently in Orlando Florida for the kids, and every single overpriced activity we do is like watching legends and NRX rods fly out the window. Ridiculous..... lol. Maybe when we get back I'll find a sale on an NRX or ebay lightly used. I think I would have to agree. I've fished many of their ML rods near or at the max limit and it feels like it should. I totally agree. I'm looking for all the expert advice now, to set up properly. Once fishing time starts, I rarely read anything and spend all my available time fishing once the weather changes. I've just found that some rods feel heavy or light even w trhe same ratings, and I don't seem to like the heavier mediums. I'm trying to switch to casting for anything above 3/8 or for sure by 1/2 oz. Then i use my MF and MH rods. For what it's worth, in my opinion the fenwick ETB medium fishes like a true medium should, but their warranty has left me wanting to not fish their rods anymore, so looking for an equivalent rod.

Yeah I think I chose the wrong wording in my first post. I'm looking for a average medium, not a weak or strong medium. I think the fenwick etbs might be that, but I haven't compared all rods. I likely will try an avid x medium, but was searching for something just a bit lighter, since they run a little stiffer. I'm sure it would work great though, many seem to like them. I still have not yet bought a loomis, but their medium might be exactly what I'm looking for. I want to try a loomis medium around 7ft, something above the e6x line.

How do fenwick elite techs or aetos compare, anyone compared then?

Is it true that a st croix ML runs heavier than most? What would be some lighter mediums? I love a st croix ML, the Medium feels to stout in the store, can t seem to bring myself to try one, but I'm looking for a MF spinning rod 150 to 250 range. How would the st croix medium spinning compare to the feel of an avid x casting medium?

I was doing it for handling puroses more than anything. Ive read several time to go w 40-50 over 20-30 to avoid backlashes and tangles. Anyone agree or disagree?

I have a ton of spinning rods, and a casting 705CB. Just wondering how to outfit the second MF casting rod for different baits or light northern cover, or to help me compare the Flouro vs braid setups. VERY spare pads or cattail edges, but just some sparse hydrilla, milfoil and pondweed. I realize this isnt a MH rod, but it a pretty stout Med like the St Croix. Seems silly to put the same 12lb FC on both, so looking for the best other option. LEaning to 50lb braid and 12lb FC leader, just dont know if you would fish the same stuff with each.

I have a new Avid X 7 MF that I spooled up with 12lb Tatsu. Figured Id try the best FC line first rather than incremental steps.... Also setting up a new Aetos 7MF, and I was thinking of spooling it with 50lb braid, and an FC leader to fish them both and see how they compare. Which would you use for fishing a bit of cover or grass, the Aetos? It has a slightly less fast action in my opinion. But I dont yet own a MH rod. Would you fish different baits on these with one being braid and one FC?
