Anyone have experience with a Dobyn's FR 664C?

Hi,

I am looking to get a "heavier then a 3 power Loomis MBR" rod for my kayak.  I like my rods on the short side and this rod will replace an Irod Fred's Magic Stick that I cannot get to work for me.  I want it for throwing frogs and other topwaters like toads, paddle tails, and other plastics fished on top.  Secondary uses would be small plastic and hard swimbaits, up to like an S-Waver 168 if the rod could take making lob-casts with something that heavy.  None of the cover I fish is super heavy and I don't mind getting my yak into the weeds if I need to get a fish out.  Not sure on the reel yet, I have a *** A on the FMS with 40lb braid on it but I am not sure I don't want to go with a heavy mono.  My main concern about the Fury is the tip.  I want to be able to load well with lighter frogs and be able to make accurate casts.  The Fury line gets a lot of good press but I have never read much at all about this specific rod and would love any input.

I've never used the 664 but I do own the 703, 734, and the 735 and they all fish a little lighter than advertised. Meaning the heavy is more like a med heavy and the med heavy is more like a med. I fish with braid and a leader so it balances out. I'm assuming a 3 power on loomis is a med so this should be a little heavier like a med heavy.

I think you will be happy with that dobyns rod...i think Loomis and dobyns power ratings are very comparable.  I wouldn' throw those s wavers on it but to cut down on rods in ur yak I would feel comfortable saying this is the rod for you.

Thanks for the info guys.  I spend some time today fishing my FMS and while it is cumbersome to deal with, it is the power/action I am looking for and it sounds like the FR 664C isnt the rod I am looking for.

I did a little looking around and it looks like St Croix has an almost identical rod in the Avid line, the AVC66MHF, and I am going to look into it and see if it might work for me.  I know St Croix tends to under-rate their rods, so it might be a better fit.

I have the St Croix Avid X 6'6 Mh-f and it's a great rod. Highly recommended.

anyone else have any experience with this dobyns rod?  Was also looking to use this as a frog rod...I like a little shorter rod so it's easier to work.  Thanks

I have one. If you're fishing exposed hooks on your toads and paddletails you might be ok. The 664 to me is kinda in between a medium and medium heavy as far as power, and to me I'd call it a moderate fast as far as action, the tip flexes a little farther down the blank compared to most fast action rods I have. It's rated for 1/4 to 3/4 lures, the lower weights cast well on it. I think you'd be fine casting lighter lures, hooksets on a long casts might be a little iffy. Hope this helps.

I do not have a 664c but do have 4 of the Sierra Series 684c F/H. They work fine for all the type baits they list for that rod on there web site. I have used them for hollow body frogs up to 1/2 oz but mostly for the smaller 1/4 oz. ones. I use mine for Texas rigs & Carolina rigs also, which they really shine at. I like the full cork handle & the little more length. Sorry I could not compare but both are Dobyns 4 power so I think you would be ok.

The rod is rated as a Heavy power, fast action. It's rated to 1 oz.  Dobyns is known for a slightly more parabolic taper. Its an awesome versatile rod. Awesome rod
