First jig catch

Featured Replies

Went fishing for about 50 minutes today and caught one in the 3 - 4 pound range on a flipping jig. The thing is, even though it wasn't hooked deep, that heavy wire hook was pretty hard to get out. The hook was barbless, but I still had to tear it's lip a lot to un-hook it. Is that common with jigs, or did he just get unlucky? ;)

Watch the pros unhook them. Just give it a solid pop and you’ll pop the hook back out. Shouldn’t tear up their lip like that.

Yeah, the problem was that the hook came back around and back through it's lip again.

Jeez that’s rough! I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before!

I caught my first jig fish last year and now its probably my favorite way to fish and a confidence bait.  Nothing better then that few second time span between the tick and the set and the bow of the rod to that moving, living weight.

Congrats! Sorry about the lip thing. Still waiting on catching my first fish with a jig. Just hasn't happened yet.

While you occasionally have to pop them, they are seldom gutt hooked

Yeah, I heard someone (Gary Klein, I believe) say that they rarely swallow them due to the weight.

Definitely my favorite way to fish now. I feel like it's going to become more of a confidence bait soon once I start getting more bites and getting better at fishing it.

Thanks. That one in your profile picture was caught on a jig, right?

Caught that one on a worm, very similar technique though.

I must be thinking of a different post. Someone posted that they caught their new PB on a jig recently...
