Line break in middle of cast?

Featured Replies

So this has happened twice to me. only thing that was the same was the rod which is a kistler klx 6'9 mh f. one day I cast 1/2oz spinner bait with a team lews custom pro and 15lb invizx and the line broke seemingly near the reel or inside the reel. I figuered i had a nick in the line. i had to send that reel in for some warranty work so i put on my shimano curado i. this time i was throwing a 3/8oz chatterbait on 15lb p line flouroclear. the line broke mid cast seemed like near the reel like last time. both the lines on these reels were spooled on not a month ago. so i figured it has to be the rod since that is the only thing that was the same both times this happened. so i checked the rod with a cue tip and cant seem to find any noticeable rough spots in the guides... but i do not know what else it could be? it is just odd that both times the line broke around the same spot both times. any idea of what it could be? any other things i should check or another way to check the guides?

there was not backlash that stopped the line either. the line broke and just sailed through the guides with probably like 20ft of line laying on top of the water and me scratching my head...i was able to retrieve both the line and lures though...

I’ve had it happen to me twice. Both on flouro. I’m thinking my line somehow got kinked on a earlier backlash. Idk, but I’m starting to rethink flouro.

for the forseable future i am also not using flouro. when i saw the flouro just float on top of the water i was surprised as i thought it was suppose to sink... also suffix seige just handles so much better i love that line.

Gotta be tip top guide, or when the line flying out some how it got snag on hook keeper.

It happened to me once, at first I thought it combination of light line and heavy lure but a month later I found my tip top guide was in bad shape.

This is exactly why I don't use straight flouro. I switched to YZH and this stuff stopped happening.

This is why I all but abandoned fluoro as a mainline. A backlash could ruin the entire spool (or at least my confidence that the line wasn't damaged) even if you got it out.

What I think may be the cause is hook nicks. When you are not fishing what do you hang the lure hook on? Either a guide frame or a hook hanger.....and your line gets nicked by the sharp hook barb. Use a lure blanket to prevent the hooks contacting the line cutting it.

Cracked guides show up with the cotton Q-tip and tested OK. Pulling out a backlash can flatten the line, it's easy to see and feel and more then likely not the cause from what was said.

None of the possible causes listed above, except with the possible exception of kinking  it bad when taking out a backlash, has anything to do with the type of line it is.

well i will just see if it happens again thanks all. just weird that the line broke in same place both times. thought for sure it would be a guide issue but i cant find anything wrong with them. will check them again though.. just sucks because now my confidence in the rod is severely hurt and i like the rod a lot... the break happened so far back in the spool is the weird part... hard to think picking out a previous backlash would cause this twice especially with the p line...

In my experience any kind of line burn ruins the integrity/strength of fluoro.  Is it possible that when the backlash occurred it caused line burn on a spot where the tangle was, or, when picking the backlash out you caused a burn spot?

not impossible. but in my opinion unlikely. i am going to take some braid and run it  all around all the guides, and if nothing i dont know what else to try...
