Question About Mercury XR6 Water pump - I'm stumped!

Featured Replies

I bought a 2001 Triton Tr-186 DC last January. The boat has a Mercury XR6 150 (also 2001). I replaced the water pump impeller when I first got the boat and the pressure seemed OK running down the lake (the guy at the dealership said it should be 15 or 20 lbs). I had never done one before but the guy at the dealership gave me a quick rundown. But when the engine is at idle, water kinda sputters out of the pee hole. I see other boats (notably my buddy's 90 Evinrude) and they squirt a hard stream at idle.

So my question is, Is this normal? Should the stream be stronger? Also where do you guys buy your parts from? Internet or local dealer?

take some weed eater line and snake out the pee hole ,you might have junk in it

Thanks Cajun, trying to get all my yearly maintenance done and I found a Mercury water pump kit at Bass Pro. I'll give that a try with the weedeater line. I just figured I did something wrong. Never thought about something in there in the way...

I have the same motor and I would say you don't have something right.  Mine at idle put out a good size stream.  As far as parts I buy from dealer.

You know Bud I think something's not right either. I'm glad you chimed in 'cause that tells me that I need to do some digging. Thanks.

Sure you don't have the impeller in backwards?

It won't have a hard stream until the motor is up to temp and the thermostat opens up.  If it's been running a while I'd say you have a blockage.  Do you have good water pressure at temp?

Carp - I'm honestly not too sure of anything yet! I'm gonna take her back down tomorrow afternoon and see what I can find.

I would reconnend getting a shop manual for your engine.    If you don't have the gasket in the right order chance you have one of the hole covered up and it will act like yours is.   They are very hard to tell apart.

I had a shop nearly burn up a merc for me by not using the right water pump impeller.  Also a water pressure guage is one of the best investment you can put on that motor.   Good luck  Bud

First le me say Thanks to everyone for helping me get going on all this.

Like I posted earlier, I bought a new water pump kit and set about replacing everything per the Seloc manual. The problem appeared to be that the "slinger" gasket was missing. I rebuilt everything and now the pressure at idle kinda bounces around a bit but runs about 20 psi. The stream from the pee hole at idle is kinda weak but fairly steady after the engine warms. I tested that using the muffs and a water hose. Tomorrow I'm gonna see how she does at the lake.

And again, thanks. Bryan
