G Loomis loose reel seat?

Featured Replies

I purchased a brand new G Loomis mossyback rod back around December during a closeout sale. Since fishing with it, I’ve noticed when I’m fighting a fish (or really whenever I put stress on the rod) the reel doesn’t feel secure in the reel seat. I wouldn’t say that it’s visibly moving inside the reel seat, but you can definitely feel a noticeable shifting/wiggling movement. I’ve tried a curado 200i, curado 70, and cbronarch mgl on this rod and it does it with each of them.

Anyone else have this problem before? Should I send the rod back for warranty?

Contact Loomis; they are the only ones who can take care of this.

There are fixes for problems like this, but one should not use them on a fairly new rod from a major high quality company except as a last resort.  Contact Loomis.

One thing not clear in your message is the exact problem.  Is the seat moving relative to the blank, or is the reel moving relative to the seat?  Sounds like the latter, but you need to be sure.  Two different issues that should be clarified before contacting Loomis.

Reel moving relative to seat. The seat is not moving relative to rod. Feels like the reel seat is defective. Sure I can wrap some tape around it but I shouldn’t have to do that on a $300 rod imo... guess I’ll send it in and see what happens.

Try 1 tape wrap around each end of the reel foot to eliminate the rod reel seat movement issue. If it's solid, then the seat locking ring is probably oversize and this is what warranties are for, factory defects.

I had some issues with a newer G Loomis IMX spinning that I got to replace a broken GL3 rod. I paid the replacement cost plus the upgrade cost. I did not like the reel seat on the newer GL3 rod.  The problem on the IMX rod was the reel would keep coming loose. I knew I was going to break it one day. I finally broke down and had my custom rod guy tear it down, turn it into a split grip setup with a new Comfort reel seat and Winn Grips. I liked our finished setup so much I had him do it to two other G Loomis rods.
