Next rod/reel plans, need suggestions

Featured Replies

Currently have an Abu UltraMax 6.4:1 on a 6'9" MHF Vengeance and a Fuego CT 8.1:1 on a 7' Abu Vendetta MHF. The Fuego/Vendetta almost always has a frog on it, with some jigs and texas rigs mixed in. The UltraMax/Vengeance has done a little bit of everything, Whopper Plopper, Jigs, Dark Sleeper, Texas rigs, chatterbaits and some squarebills. I throw wacky rigs, top water walking baits, and poppers on my sons Lews American Hero MF spinning combo.

After lots of reading, I've seen that the general consensus is that a Medium power Moderate action rod is best for treble hook lures. I have also read a lot about the Tatula SV, I think this is going to be my next reel (and probably the best reel I'll own for quite a while, if not ever).

My question is, does it make sense to put the Tat SV on a Med./Mod. rod and use it for top water/treble hooks/wacky rigs/weightless plastics/finesse applications? If so, I need to find a rod. Looking for something around $100. I've been looking at the Dobyns Fury 705CB, and 7' Falcon BuCoo SR. Would these be good pairings? What other rods would you suggest? Is this even a good idea? My other thought was to get another Fuego instead of SV for the Med/Mod and get an SV later with another rod, possibly put it on the Vendetta and get a Heavy rod for the 8.1:1 Fuego for frogging, but then would the Vendetta do justice to the SV? So many questions! Sorry guys, I really appreciate all the great info here.

A 6.4:1 tatula ct or tatula sv would pair nicely with a falcon Bucoo sr "trap caster" or the 705 cb from dobyns. With my svs I can pitch weightless worms and light jigsbwith ease and without backlash

Thanks @CroakHunter what is the "trap caster"? And would I want the MH/Mod Falcon? Are they rated higher than they actually fish like Dobyns?

Trap caster is the 7ft mh moderate fast rod. They fish a bit lighter and slower than advertised on my opinion. I have a review of the sr on this site.

I dont know why I see this all the time. Is it because they have fast tips making you think you are not in control? I have several Dobyns and I have no problems even going over the stated lure weight. I thought we spend all this money on the fast and extra fast tips with the big backbones. Maybe im wrong and should just stick with the Ugly Sticks.

Do not stick with Ugly STicks, they work but if you ever touch another rod you will be in trouble LOl.

Remember not all rod companies follow the same standards on ratings.

The trap caster is a model within the Falcon Buccoo series of rods ( both the SR and Micro guide series rods) I have a Bucoo Micro series Trapcaster. It is rated as a 7 foot Medium Heavy power, moderate fast flex rating.  these are very good for rattle traps, cranks any bait with a treble hook) as well as a bigger heavier spinnerbait or buzzbait. They handle baits up to 3/4 of an ounce very well. I am sure the SR will be fine.

I am a true proponent of the Daiwa reels and fish a bunch of original Tatula, Tatula Type Rs and Tatula CTs.  Everyone has gone nuts over the Tatula SV TWS. It is a great reel. It was designed to be the best reel in the Tatula family of reels for throwing light baits and skipping baits. The reel uses a different set of brake components and a SV spool in order to accomplish this. In my opinion you might find the SV is a little better with the unweighted plastic and the Tatula CT is a bit better at getting distance with the treble baits.  My Bucoo Trapcaster has a Daiwa Tatula CT on it and it performs extremely well. Either way it is a great combo.

You're saying Dobyns have fast tips? That may be the first time I've heard that.

Compared to the ugly sticks of my past and my tatula elite yes. What would you consider a fast tip?

I consider fast to be a rod that hits the backbone somewhere around 1/4 length from the tip.  Everyone will have their own criteria I guess based on the rods they are used to using.

As I'm sure you've noticed, even rod manufacturers have their own versions of what a fast rod should be.

I only ask because Dobyns is pretty widely accepted as a great rod company, but equally known for having slower blank ratings.  Not necessarily a good or bad thing, just never heard anyone refer to Dobyns rods as being on the fast side.

Unless comparing them to a spinning rod 'fast which can be dang near parabolic.

There is no standard for how tapers are classified.  This chart is a pretty good representation of each taper with equal force applied:

So, uh....any other thoughts on the pairing of the Tat SV with one of those rods for my intended purpose? Is that the right Dobyns to be looking at? Any other recommended rod for that purpose?

My wife owns 2 Dobyns Sierra rods and I own several Dobyns Champion XP series rods.  They are all terrific and as I stated I own a Falcon Bucoo Micro Trapcaster rod. The are all good rods or I would not still fish them.

I have a friend that owns 5 Dobyns Fury rods including a 705CB and he loves all of them. There will be no mistake in choosing either one. As for the Daiwa  the SV TWS is a great reel and so is the standard Tatula CT. It is a toss up.

Thanks @fishnkamp! Would either of the rods be good to pull double duty? Topwater/treble hooks and plastics? And you agree about the Trapcaster (MH/Mod) over the Med/Mod? I like the aesthetics of the Falcon better, so am leaning that direction all things being equal.

You can fish plastics on mod action rods. Not ideal but it’s certainly doable. Especially with lighter wire hooks.

You want the MH falcon. It fishes more towards a M than MH.

You should think about a medium/Fast spinning setup for Soft plastics as you already have a bunch of mh casting setups !
