Looking for a sensitive and lightweight jerkbaits/small crank and squarebill rod. I have been using a MH mojo bass rod but it’s heavy and not sensitive enough.  When I fish with jerkbaits a lot of times they hit it while it’s sitting there on the pause and it’s hard to feel the hit or tell if they ate it and sometimes they spit it before I can set a hook. And fishing for 8 hours with such a heavy rod can kill my wrists with the twitching.  I prefer MH fast action but soft enough tip to not rip trebles out of the face.  

My jerkbait rods are much lighter and softer action than my squarebill rods.

Trebles on jerkbaits are smaller and I rarely fish them in cover.

Where my squarebills are being throw in & around all kinds of cover.

Jerkbaits get thrown on 10 - 12lb fluorocarbon while squarebills see heavier twine in the 14 - 20 lb class.

 

So all that to me means - two different sticks.

 My favorite jerkbait rods is the Alpha Rods Slasher - super light and has the right amount of length, sensitivity & back end to do the job I need when casting & setting hooks at a distance.

Think pairing a Jerk with topwater is the better way to go if you must.

Crankbaits are a different animal regardless of what the manufacturers say.

If you must go with one, the GLX MBR M/F would top the list

I use a Avid 6’2” M/XF for topwater and jerkbait and love it for both.  Super light rod and the tip is the best I have ever used for poppin and jerkin. 

I also use an Avid (older pre IPC) AC62MXF for jerkbaits, spooks, and poppers.  This is spooled with 30# Tuf-line Supercast.  For traps, squarebills, and small wake baits, I use a LTBC70MF with 15# Invisx.

I was thinking of going with the avid x , I think they have some at our cabelas just didn’t know anyone who had any or how they held up. 

My Avid is almost 20 years old.  Avid X uses the same SCIII blank.

On a whim I bought a Duckett Micro Magic crankbait rod back when they first came out. I was going to throw square bills on it, which I eventually did, but instead started throwing jerk baits on it. I absolutely love it as a jerk bait rod.I even threw a Pop R and a buzz bait on it the other day, the buzz bait was kind of iffy but I managed to catch a 4lber with it. I had a couple other Ducketts I didn't care for and they actually broke, but this one is still going strong. I have recently been switching over to all Megabass rods but this particular Duckett is one of my favorites.

I use a Dobyns 685cb or 705cb at the moment. They're both great rods for this. If you're looking to get just 1 rod for both purposes I'd go with the 705cb. Both rods are also great top water rods as well for lighter lures like poppers and smaller walking baits.
