Rain and it’s effects on reels?

Featured Replies

Today I decided to do some fishing before work. It was lightly raining almost misty.  I know that typically during regular fishing the reel tends to get a little wet, especially when using braid.  But today it go fully damp. Should I be worried about this?

On another note, how often should I clean and lube my reels?  I fish 3-4 times a week, weekends can be half the day sometimes.

I don’t care too much if it is raining, that said afterwards I am sure to dry them pretty well and leave them near a window or something but I’m not too worried about rain.

I always check the internals and wipe down any drops that might have gotten. Misty conditions are probably nothing to worry about. If you live where I do that’s nearly a given in the fall and winter. Pretty much all you need to do unless you know full well water got in to warrant more clean up and maintenance.

Also, if this were a salt water outing, definite clean up.

Have been fishing in out right down pours with mine.  Meh, big deal.  Just let them dry out and keep going.

I've been on numerous week long trips where it rained nearly every day and I fished through it all. I've found that my Shimano's needed a little drop of oil on the brake drum more often than usual, but I have never noticed any other side effects from the rain.

Great to know all.  Thanks

I rinse my spinning reels when I use them in the surf under a faucet and let them air dry on the rod rack with no ill effects so rain shouldn't be a problem.

Only thing I would be worried about is if the reels are dusty and haven't been wiped down in a while and you get that early morning fog/dew and that dust starts to turn to sludge.
