Help w/  charger hook up

Featured Replies

I currently have two batteries hooked up, one for the accesories and one for the OB. I am in the process of buying a 24V TM and debating on an onboard charger or portable. I bought 2 new Interstate Marine batteries (29 bank) for the TM. I am not sure if I should just hook the accesories to the OB and get rid of one of the older batteries or not and then get a 4 bank onboard charger or portable. Weight and storage isn't an issue.

I was wondering how you run the wiring for an on board charger . I take it each individual battery gets connected to the charger?  The reason I ask is because I have a 24 volt (2 12v batteries for my trolling motor) system . Do I also need a circuit breaker for each battery? I am clueless on this issue and wanted to get a better idea so I can buy everything needed at once. Is there anything else I should get?

If I decide to go w/ a single bank portable charger......how does that work for charging the 2 batteries wired together to make them a 24 volt system? Do I have to disconnect them prior to charging?

If possible...attatch a picture to how you have your system wired.

THANKS!

If you go with a portable charger, you will have to disconnect the jumper. If you use an onboard charger, you won't have to disconnect the jumper for your tm batteries. Each battery gets it's own dedicated output from an onboard charger. If batt. 1 reaches full charge before batt.2, the charger will swing the amperage to batt. 1 to finish it up. Where as the portable will only handle one battery at a time.

You need to run one circuit breaker inline for the tm. MK recommends a 50 amp circuit breaker for a 24v system.

I also just purchased a 24v TM, and I'm thinking about going with two(2) 2 bank onboard chargers... one for the tm's,and another for the other two batteries. I run my motor off one battery, and my accessories off another, so i'm running four batteries.... ;)

never been stranded due to lack of juice.......

Go with the onboard. I went with out one for a while and adding it was the best improvement to my boat, ever. Hook your TM to two deep cycles and run your cranking battery to all the other accessories. By doing this you will only need a 3 bank charger. Mine is wired this way and it has served me very well.

All of you batteries should be marine quality.

You should charge every time you come in and the onboard makes this an easy chore.
