Blank power?

Featured Replies

I have a MH mag taper MHX rod I built a few years ago and like  the blank. Was going to try a comparable Rainshadow blank, the spec's are similar but the blank power on the MHX is MH vs M on the Rainshadow blanks?
Should I go by rod power or spec's to compare blanks from different companies?

MB843MHX      7'0      10-17      1/4-3/4      .590      5.0      2.45
IMMC72M         7'2      10-17      1/4-3/4      .530     5.5       2.5
REVC72M        7'2      10-17      1/4-3/4      .522      5.0      2.84

No, there is no such thing as power and action when comparing blanks from different companies. They are subjective measurements at best, and most relevant within the same company's blank design. Go from MB to some other design and all bets are off.

Lastly, I think there are regional influences too. Blanks from the west's cleaner, deeper reservoirs are a bit different from blanks designed in other regions.

One can easily and accurately evaluate power and action of blanks and rods using the CCS method.  It doesn't matter whose blanks or rods they are.  Or where in the country they came from .  Numbers are numbers.   It is purely objective.  With experience you will be able to translate what the numbers mean with respect to your preferences and requirements.  If you had the CCS numbers for these three blanks you could easily distinguish the differences.

There is a way that works well that uses a pedestal instead of the big sheet of "plywood."  Less of a storage issue for the equipment.

Rods could be bought and the ones whose numbers didn't fit the requirement could be returned undamaged in any way.

Mick is right, but if you don't feel up to the CCS setup and testing go by specs over rating  labels

I have read on the CCS and agree that's probably the best comparison. I was guessing the specs meant more than power rating. Knowing they're different blanks I'm hoping for them to have similar power.

Andy, I have built on the top two blanks in your your list. That medium power rated Immortal blank is, in my opinion, a MH blank. The rod I built for myself on that blank is a fav, and the ones I built for other folks have been very well received. You will be happy with it.
