Ideal action/taper for a jig/pitch rod

Featured Replies

Just was reading some old posts on here and it got me thinking. It looks like most all rods made with jig and soft plastic pitching in mind have are a fast or even extra fast. It seems to me a more moderate action would be better for this. Am I wrong in thinking that? Does anyone even make a moderate with jig fishing in mind?

Fast and Extra Fast actions are better for setting stout single hooks in general.  The rod stops bending sooner and reaches the power portion of the blank faster.  Some of the benefits of faster action rods are that they tend to be better at transmitting vibration, aid in setting single hooks at a good distance and make it easier to move fish away from cover.  Moderate and Moderate Fast rods have typically been used in crankbait fishing where small wire trebble hooks are easily torn out of a  fishes mouth, their parabolic action helps prevent this.     Everyone in fishing has an opinion on this, and now you know mine.

Paul? You are starting to worry me. Fish more, read less. There are no "ideal" rods.

Rods are often labeled faster than they actually fish for marketing reasons. Lace up any stick you are considering and bend it, it's really the only way to know for sure.
