I bought an Orra Winch I was going to pair up with my 7'6" deep crank rod. Looks like the reel will hold 180 yards of 12 lb mono. I wanted to put a 6XD or 8XD on and go throw it around a little bit. I have about a 100 yards 12 lb Seagar Invizx fluero doing nothing that I was going to put on there but I was concerned about something. For typical "chuck and retrieve" for a while even with much longer casts and deeper diving stuff would 100 yards work for a while or am likely to come to the end of the spool when casting? I know that obviously when I really start to use it this season I will fill it up but I was just curious if this is enough to me able to safely "give it all I've got" as it were with bombing a cast out there?

I would say 100 yds should be more than enough. It's what I try and shoot for anytime I'm splitting spools and topping off reels, including my deep cranking reels. Sounds like you might have to run 75 yds or so of mono as a backing first though so the line ends up full on the reel spool.

While I have never done it I have certainly heard of backing. What is the point/advantage of doing this?

If the spool holds 180 yards and you are only spooling 100 yards on, while you won't run out of line on a cast, you will have issues because the spool won't be at full capacity as designed. It will affect casting distance, drag settings and retrieve speeds. Just find some junk mono sitting around somewhere and wind on about 75 yds, then attach your fluoro to it with a uni-uni knot or similar and wind the remaining 100 yards of fluoro on. That will give you a full spool right near that 180 yd. designation.

I'll even do this with 300 yd. spools of mono that I am testing.  I'll put some cheap mono backing on first so I can try the line on 3 or 4 reels.

About 100 yds? How are you determining this? If it's anything close to that It should be fine. Might want to lay down some backing, and you'll probably need to if it's much less than 100yds.

This, always try to keep your reels full or close to it. Whatever cheap mono backing you put on can stay on for a long time. When you need new line, strip off to the backer and respool the last 100 yds.

100 yards is more than enough for casting distance.  I'd add some backing purely so you will achieve the intended retrieve speed though.
