Has anyone ever tried this? I catch a lot of bass in some really cold water using a drop shot. Thought about giving this a try this year. Let me know if you have any experience doing this. 

I watched a video yesterday on YouTube. Two guys catching fish on a half frozen golf course pond using drop shots. 

 

It it was the only thing they tried that worked. It will be in my arsenal once we have ice out.

Like NYWayfarer mentioned, I through the drop shot as my main technique on a New England lake that is crystal clear, I use it year round here. Also, on my home lake in Carbon county Pa, presumably close to where you are, I have landed quite a few fish on the drop shot when 90% of the lake is frozen. I have actually landed more big fish this way than any other, while fishing this lake. 

 

I like to start with a bucktail chatter bait to cover some water and see if there are some semi active fish around, usually I catch one or two decent fish, but if not, I pick up a couple on the drop shot. I like 6 lb test and a 3' leader for this. also a small bait with minimal action, and a painstakingly slow retrieve

Don't wait until ice-out, if you ice fish that is.  I down size and use a 1/16oz hair jig in place of the drop shot weight. Crappies on the 1in. tube and an occasional bass, sometimes a double.
