Replacement hooks

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for the best replacement hooks for my 6" Triple Trouts. They come stock with KVD Triple Grips in #2. I've tried Owner ST-36 and they bend out when using the line/rod combo I toss them on. I have some STX-45 Zo Wire #2 on one of them and haven't had a fish on that one with those hooks yet. Those are super sticky and are supposed to be 2x strong, but regular diameter. I've been considering just putting the STX-45 or KVDs on all of them, but I can't decide.

Maybe try the new River2Sea 4x trebles. I’ve always been impressed by them on the Whopper Plopper.

Why do you want to replace the stock hooks? Are the too weak?

I highly recommend Decoy X-s21 quad hooks. They don’t work for everything, but for certain lures they are hands down the best. They are scary sharp and keep fish pinned like nothing else.

Why? There's a possibility of bending out. When You're using a MH swimbait rod, 20# P-Line PF and a drag locked down, even a small fish can bend a hook. I bent a #2 ST-36 on a 14" fish. If I can get a 2x or 3x strong hook, like an ST56 ot Gammie round bend 2x, that may solve that issue. I think I may try the STX 45 Zo wires and see how they hold up.

One thing to watch out for with some Owner hooks (St-36, St-41, maybe others too) are they have smaller barbs than a lot of hooks, making it easier for bass to throw them. I’d look into it on the models of hooks you’re considering before ordering them.

I use the Decoy Quads. Sharp, and strong, fish look at them wrong and they're stuck.

@Bluebasser86 my issue with the Quads is they're so heavy.

use a size smaller, that's what I do.

Hmm, hadn't considered that. #4 just seems so small.

They pin fish so hard that it doesn't seem to matter. I don't know how much I'd really worry about them being a little heavier on a sinking, straight retrieve bait like a TT though. I downsize on my glides so it doesn't mess with the action and the sink rate on the pause but keep it pretty across the board the same with straight retrieve baits like a Bull Shad.

Maybe I'll have to give them a shot Clayton.

Have you looked at Trapper Hooks?  I've read great things about them.  I'm considering a test this spring.  I'll do a slow changeout if it performs as well as I'm seeing online.

They seem extremely gimmicky. I'll pass.

They were Best of Show award winners at ICast in 2016 and 2017, and a number of great performances on Youtube.  But I understand you're reluctance.  Good luck.

I'm more apt to grab some Decoy Quads or more Owner or KVD Triple Grips than try something unproven, to me anyway.
