Carpet

Featured Replies

Does anyone have an idea on how to remove old carpet backing and glue from the deck of an aluminum bass boat? I have just started my renovation project and am having a heck of a time scraping this stuff off!! Acetone makes the rubber pliable enough to scrape off, just looking for an easy way.

I just pulled up carpet in my basement, it was glued to the floor and a lot of glue was left. I bought a heavy duty floor scraper from Lowes and that scraped up the old dried up stuff in a hurry.

I hope I'm not leading you down the wrong path...I would think you'd need to be extra careful using a tool like this on a boat.

I tried the acetone as well, and it just seemed to push the glue around like you say. I'm sure it would work...I'm just not that patient.

I agree with dan. But hey, im 14. I dont know mush about this.

I'm a long time carpet layer and unfortunately I gotta tell you that it just takes a small scraper and time. Wish I had better new for ya.

I used an orbital sander w/ a 35 grit paper on it for the bulk removal of this stuff.

What a nightmare, my knuckles will never be the same but in the end......it's all worth it.

Thanks guys; Looks like I just need to grin and bear it, I'll try the sandpaper and heatgun ideas though!

Try using ordinary paint stripper.  I've had success with it in the past.

+1 on the heat gun. A hair dryer will work as well, just takes a little longer.

I managed to get all of the old rubber carpet backing up along with almost all remanants of the glue using plenty of acetone and a hand scraper. I bought some gray carpet from Basspro (at $5.99 6' X 1') and it seems fine.

Cutting the wood for the decks was a little tricky but a rotozip and wood plane made the job a lot easier. I got the wife to help lay the carpet and have started to re-assemble.

Can't wait to get out there.
