Hydrofoils - you guys use em?

Featured Replies

Hey Guys,

I was just curious...do you guys use the hydrofoils on your boats?  I was looknig at StingRay, SE Sport, etc and was curious about them.  My pops has one on his runabout and loves it, but I didn't know if it would make a difference on dedicated fishin boats as well.

I have a 90 HP Merc, and a pretty light boat, so ill be running close to or just over 50 mph at WOT, so dunno if I would benefit from one or not.

I use one from stingray and its great.  Its made my boat into a whole new boat.  It help me the most in rough water.  Made it ride so much smoother.  It didnt slow the boat down at all.  I think it if any thing may have gave me a little more speed just because in rougher water I can trim it a little higher and not get beat to death.  If you are happy with your boat may not need one but if you are looking for some help getting out of the whole or in rough water its well worth a try I think.  O yeah I running it on a 17' procraft with a 140 johnson.  not all that light of a boat.

I run the SE Sport 300 on one of my hotrod motors on the back of my Stratos 285 Pro. If the motor height is right, it should not be in the water when running on the pad. I run it on that motor because it's cranking over 325 hp and I run a modified 28" Raker and the SE Sport helps bunches on the hole shot. Before I put it on, the nose wanted to raise when I shot the power to it, with the foil, it comes out almost flat but has no affect on the boat when running WOT. Boat will run 83 with or without the foil.

I did cut aprox 2 inches off the sides so they didn't bite when making hard turns. Kinda raised the pucker factor after triming the motor down to make a 70 mph turn and the thing bit the water in the middle of a hard, highspeed turn.

I have a set of DolFins attached to the 60hp motor on my 17' Tracker. The difference in hole shot performance was amazing, plus rough water performance was improved.

A word of caution. Be very careful when motoring through standing timber. I've heard tales of damaged lower units and cavitation plate due to hard impact to the hydrofoil, but it's all third hand info.

I also have a set on my 17'Ranger w/150 Merc. and it was some of the best money that I ever spent for the same reasons listed above. I would recommend get a pair.

ok, follow up question then...

Do you guys have stock props on there? (except for W2S... of course he doesn't!  :))

The reason i ask is because i have a aftermarket SS prop on mine that already helps w\ hole shot.  So im wondering if the hydrofoils are a cheaper alternative to replacing the stock prop?

OR, since my current prop limits my top end a bit, but gets me up on plane real fast, could i change pitch for a little more top end, and add a hydrofoil to get my on plane better with the new prop....get what i mean?

The SE Sport is going to help hole shot no matter what prop, what motor, or what boat it's on.   It's just a matter of if you want the dorkey looking thing on the motor and if you want to drill four holes in the anti-cav plate to mount it.   I don't use one on my Javelin because it comes out of the hole pretty much flat and with ease anyway, but even if I put one on it, it would come out that much better.  I just think they look dorkey as hell or would run one on everything I have.

Way2Slow:  Dorky?  That's like saying the F-16 fighter looks Dorky.  Haven't you noticed that Hydrofoils are a real chick magnet?

I do not use them; however, I have no problems with anyone using them. I run either a Lazer or Tempest prop, 23 pitch.
