Help: Silver Max on one of my squarebill rods doing strange things.

Featured Replies

I have a Silver Max reel that every once in awhile on a cast will make a type of crunch or a grind noise and the handle will start spinning. It casts perfectly fine most of the time and it doesn't act up in any other way. However when it does this it slows the lure so fast or momentarily stops momentum, that it puts such an immediate strain on the rod that I'm convinced it's going to snap it. What is going on here?

The clutch is engaging mid cast. Could be it wasn’t fully disengaged, May have bumped the thumb bar and it may be sticky and need cleaning. Any or all could be at play. I’d do it for you but honestly, the cost would approach replacement cost.

I know the Silver Max has a “rocket clutch.” Could the problem lie there? Also, I noticed that mine had its rulon washer fused with the brass gear. This could be an issue, though I am not sure how.

i bought one as a cheap reel to jig for crappie and troll for sand bass. Biggest piece of junk I have ever owned. Sometimes you actually do get what you pay for.

I owned a Silver Max that did the exact same thing after 2 years of fishing  120 days a year in freshwater and brackish/saltwater, but it was a 2014 SMAX2 version before they redesigned the clutch and improved the reel.

Same here. The Silver Max hasn't held up nearly as well as the Black Max. I've had 2, and know others where the disengaging clutch thingy started doing that in a season or 2. Junk!

I opened up a Silver Max and a Lew’s Speed Spool LFS once. I was surprised at how similar the two were in design and materials (brass gears, similar washers, etc). But the LFS casts better, and I know that it has more bearings. Maybe the bearings in the Silver Max need replacement?
