Good Inexpensive Light/Ultra Light rod and reel

Featured Replies

I've been looking for a decent 7' or so light or ultra light rod to fish panfish as well as smaller bass around my home lake.  I don't want to spend a ton on the setup and am looking for something I can find in store at Cabela's (I hate ordering online and shipping).  One option I've been looking at is the 7'6" BPS Micro Lite Ultra Light rod.  It's very inexpensive ($19.99) and has great reviews on their website.  Are there any other options you guys might suggest?  Also what would be a good reel to pair with one?  I'd like to keep the total for both under $100 if possible but definitely no more than $150.

My UL rig is a Pflueger President 25 reel on a 6'6" Diawa Spinmatic UL rod. At retail, the total for the pair is well under $100. The rig is responsive and a joy to fish with. The Spinmatic comes in lengths from 4' to 8', so no problem finding a 7' in that series.

The next up from the Spinmatic is the Presso for about $70, so getting the better rod would still keep you under the $150 max.

I have a couple Okuma Celilo CE -S-702L-1. Nice little 7 ft 2 piece light for around $20. Good rod that wont make you cry if you break it. I paired them with Shimano Sienna 1000FE's to make them $50 combos.

Thanks guys, these will give me a couple of things to look for this weekend when we trek to Cabela's.  There isn't a ton otherwise close to us so I'm hoping to find a good rig there.
