Hey guys i am looking to get a new football jig rod. I want a longer one like a 7'3. How do these two rods compare to one another? I was looking at the sierra 734 or the 7'3 heavy endurance. Thanks!

So I have broken it down to pretty much the 734 in either line. With the tackle warehouse 4th sale I can get the powell for $127 and the sierra for $150. This is pretty much going to be used for 1/2oz football jigs plus trailers dragging around 10-15 ft. I cannot go anywhere locally to get my hand on either of these. Which would you recommend?

I have a Powell Max3D 714 spinning rod, and it's very sensitive for the price point. I've never had a Dobyns, but from what I can gather about them, they're a little more moderate than other brand's flexes, and very well balanced rods.

 

 

I don’t own either of those exact models, but I do own both Powell and Dobyn’s rods. If it helps, I’ve found that Powell’s seem to run a little heavier, and Dobyn’s tend to run a little lighter than their weight ratings. So if you’re chucking huge jigs, the Dobyn’s might seem a little under powered. 

I've not owned the powell but my buddy has several and loves them. I've had a cple of the sierras I won at a tournament. They were ok but nothing special at all to me for the price. I've owned 100 dollar rods I personally liked a lot more. Between the 2 I'd go powell.

Not sure why, cause those are two completely different sticks. For what you are describing, of those two, the Powell. If you go Dobyns, go up to one of their 5 or even 6 power sticks,

They both are the length I’m looking for and they both have the correct weight range. I don’t live. Lose enough to anywhere that sells these so that I can feel them so all I can go by is what I’m reading. How are they different?

4 power Dobyns are essentially Medium Powered. 4 Power Endurance is slightly heavier than a MH.

Gotchya thanks. Im likely going with the powell then. I have a 735 fury already that I had used for a football jig rod but it is really tip heavy.

I know the trend is toward longer rods, but that just makes them feel even more tip heavy. Unless there is a good reason for going longer, a 7' rod is going to be more sensitive, lighter, and better balanced. A lighter, smaller reel will also make a stick feel tip heavier as well, particularly if you hold it while palming the nose of it with plastics and jigs.

That does make a lot of sense. The reason I want the longer rod is for when I get bit on long cast I can still feel confident hooking up. I have also used a 7ft heavy duckett mmp and on really long cast I have struggled setting the hook when it is at the end of the cast
