Waypoint location

Featured Replies

Having trouble with waypoint distance. Let’s say I mark a way point and I have the ring circles on and my boat is in the first circle even with my heading line pointing right at the waypoint I can’t seem to hit it/find with my cast how can I fix this?

Use a marker buoy as a referance point to help pin point structure and or cover.

What kind of unit? What kind of GPS receiver(Internal in unit or external antenna)?

The number of satellites your unit is connected to will determine your accuracy. The GPS diagnostic page on Humminbird units will tell you your possible position error distance(accuracy). Depending on reception for your antenna, your unit can give you a location but have an accuracy distance off by a couple hundred feet.  The best I've seen is typically around 12-16 ft accuracy.  This applies to every time you try to hit that waypoint, along with the very first time when you marked the waypoint.

If this is the case, the only way to fix it is to wait a little longer in one spot to allow for your unit to connect to more satellites for a more accurate position, or reposition your GPS Antenna.

it could be as simple as not zooming in enough.  I must have had exceptional units for the last 10 years or so because I can get accuracy down to less than 10 feet with ease.  That is based on going back to spots where if I'm on them, I can see them, so know exactly how accurate.

But if you're not zoomed in enough, you can think you're on them and you're still a ways away.

I agree with A-Jay, GPS is not the best way to stay on a spot.  Once you find where you want to be, use a floating marker for precision and ease of seeing exactly where the target is.  By putting a couple out, with the target in between, you are sending signals to other fishermen that they are not welcome inside the markers.
