Hey guys, I am new around here, wife saying can spend some money on fishing stuff so I'm looking to get more serious into fishing, i currently have a ugly stick Canadian tire combo. Nothing serious and I have used st croix and shimano rods from buddies and I like the feel of the st croix looking at a axc70mhm at a local place, good deal brand new for 240 no tax, is this a good rod for starting out ? What reel would you put on it. I got a buddy selling this Okuma HELIOS HS- 273Va Bait cast reel 7:3:1 gear ratio 6.3 ounces Right hand retrieve for 100$ good deal?

I know these questions get asked all the time and everyone is different. But any and all help is appreciated

List your budget and items you want and we can go from there such as:

2 reels 1 spinning 1 casting $400usd

1x finesse spinning rod $250usd

1x do it all casting $150usd

Don't list canadian currency because we yanks dont like to do math.

The OP is asking if the Avid X 7' MHM is a good rod to start out with for a casting combo.  I will have to let someone else answer that as I have zero experience with any St. Croix moderate action rod.  Normally a Fast (more often) or Moderate-Fast (less often) action rod is suggested for an all around rod.  My only St. Croix is a Mojo Bass 7' MF.....so no help there.

What condition is the Helios in?  That is at least 50% off MSRP so if it is in decent shape, then that is a good price.  I have the LP model which has the green trim and it listed for $219.99 in 2011.  Tackletour gave it a "Great" rating.  Here is a link to the review.

I haven't used mine much, but I like it so far.

The Helios TCS is the blue trim model (and newer I think) and lists for $199.99 at TW.

EDIT: I don't what, or if, there is any differences between the two models.  Other than color trim.

For ball park calculation use 25%, (1.25 X Usd = Canadian) ie; $100 USD = $125 Canadian.

I believe TW, St Crox and Dobyns sells and ships to Canada adding GST (5% Goods & Service tax) plus 8% sales tax.

Look at the TW site and do the math.

The current exchange rate is:

 1.31 Canadian /1 US

As of this minute it's .76 USD to 1 Canadian, may change in the morning but good enough for 25% "ball park" math.

hey everyone, thanks for the replies. ideally if I could get a decent/good casting rod and reel setup for $250.00-$300.00 US that would be the best.

the Canada/US exchange is horrible, duties and shipping anything here is awful and I try to avoid it as much as I can.

100$ US is costing me $135 Canadian now, from what I have seen the st. Croix rods for example are fairly close to the same price as US but without the exchange.

I have talked with a few guys last night at the fish shop and passed on the avid x MHM as this is what they have in stock and go back to the MHF like I was looking for originally for a solid all around rod. I have found a shimano chronarch ci4+ 150 MLG for 200$ so with all that I should be around $450 Canadian that would be roughly $340 US in todays price. I know its more then my original budget but seems to be a fairly solid combo.
