Choosing between Daiwa Tatula 7 ft M Regular, Dobyns Fury 734, and Falcon Bucoo SR. Does anyone use these for topwater baits. Specifically walking baits such as Storm arashi cover pops,  Strike King Sexy Dawg, and Sexy dawg jr on 30lb braid. Thanks.

The Daiwa  fishes more like a medhvy and would work well.   In the falcon line the 5-17 would be great. I have a few in the old bucoo and cara lineup.

 

i would not personally want anything over 7’ for walking baits.  

I walk baits with more of a side twitch so I can get away with a longer rod. I will say the 734 Dobyns has a nice action and power for walkers but it’s a little long since I bank fish.

I unsure if you're aware of this but braid and walking baits don't always play nice together - especially on long casts, in my experiences.   As often as not, within the first few snaps of the rod tip to get the bait walking, it will swing back on itself and catch the braid in the rear treble.  The limpness of the braid is the culprit.    Some guys get around this issue by installing a short (foot or so) fairly stout fluorocarbon leader.

Me- I just use 17 or 20 lb mono for top water baits. Your results may differ.  I currently use a 6'3" or a 6' All Star Top Water Special.   The 6'3" model is the old original company 10 X model.   The 6' one, I picked up at Academy on close out last year - the purple series.    Rod length from the reel seat to the handle is the same, the older model has a slightly longer handle behind the reel seat.

It depends on the size of topwater, for large topwaters I use my 7'5" iRod Fiber Heavy/Fast but for small topwaters like spooks, Sexy Dawgs, Arashi poppers etc. I am actually going to use a 6'6" Medium Berkley Lightning Rod Shock and I'm spooling my reel with 30lb. Hi-Vis braid and putting a 10lb. mono leader.

I've got 2 of the 2018 Tatula TTU701MRB and it really shines throwing 1/2oz baits. I mainly throw Sammy 100 and Sexy dawg jr on it. The other I use for KVD 1.5's.

It's rated to 1oz but I think its pushing rod to much so I don't throw large Spooks or the bigger Sexy Dawg on it. FWIW I don't use braid

Just picked up the Tatula on an eBay auction for $77 couldn’t pass it up.

What rod do you throw the bigger sexy dawg on?

That's a great price I'm sure you will like it. For the larger baits I use an older Bass Pro Shop Graphite Series MH it's listed as a fast action but its more of a moderate fast to me  

 

I use a falcon bucoo 6’6”m perfect for spooks and poppers and i also fish braided line on it

If you can find one of the previous gen models (split cork grip) of the Berkley Lightning Rod Shock at Walmart for $40 or less it's an incredible bang for the buck. No it's not the most sensitive but for what you're using it for with small topwaters it's perfect and the 6'6" Medium has a lure rating of 1/4oz. - 3/4oz.

 Most of my bass fihing stuff is older and I've been using a couple of old Bass Pro rods that I don't think they carry any more. One's a med/lt 6ft Crankin Stick and the other's a 5'6" lt Tourney Special.  They've worked for a long time with the 1/4 oz surface lures like Pop Rs, SkitterPops & one Rico (gift) I use.

Distance is over rated i fish on a kayak im more into casting 30 40 yrds at targets and workin it with small to hard pops..hard to do that with a 7 ft rod and a long handle 

I have been using a St. Croix Mojo Bass topwater rod. The rod's action is perfect for topwaters and jerkbaits. Unfortunately, my kid got a snag in a small amount of grass, so I have shipped it back and am waiting for my replacement under warranty.

Yes. Charlie Cambell the famous Ozark area topwater expert prefers a 5"6 limber casting rod for spook fishing. You can cast a long distance, and the shorter rod length keeps you from jerking the bait away from fish on the hookset.

Why do all these people think you can cast longer distances with a shorter rod? And the truth is that a more moderate action rod helps with not ripping the bait away from the fish.
