Top Water : Pencil Popper vs. Spook Colors ?

Featured Replies

*I'm interested in your thoughts regarding top water Pencil Popper colors vs. Spook (or similar) colors in clear to slightly stained water ? ... I use Pencil Poppers when there is a  chop on the water , more wave action (due to boat traffic) , or more breezy conditions . Chrome , Bone and a brighter semi -  translucent colors (with red gill  , chartreuse & bright blue) come to mind ... For calmer conditions non  - popping walking baits (Spooks , Sexy Dawgs , etc.) I tend to go with Bone or translucent colors (never tried chrome) ... What are your thoughts or experiences with the above ?

Usually white unless crystal clear then ghost blue shad(mostly I use Lucky Craft topwaters).

Evergreen Shower Blows. The best of both worlds. I prefer the 105 size. 9/16 oz. 4-1/8" long. Favorite color - Emerald Shiner.

The first pencil popper I used was a Cordell Pencil Popper for stripers and Salt water version made by Braid for tuna about 40 years ago, never had much luck with them for LMB, so retired them.

Pencil poppers sit low in water tail end down so the fish get a good look them verses top water walking baits, color could make a difference. Blue herring colors are very popular where herring are prominate baitfish. Out west the more translucent Shad colors are working well.

Pencil poppers are usually fished fast with a jumping noisy retreive and because of the rear weight design cast great in the wind.

The Evergreen looks good!

I favor a Sammy that has a clear belly and a translucent green back.  They have a nose-up attitude on the pause, so I'd think with them, the color may matter moreso than with topwaters that sit flat on the surface.

I don't use poppers a lot, but when I do, it's a bullfrog Chug Bug with a yellow belly. The Chug Bug is a good mix between a popper and walker.

I like chrome or white/bone  on pencils, and more natural forage colors for walking baits, but the fish don't often have a preference.

Clear water I prefer Sammy100 translucent bottom/sides with light brown back. If winds blowing I'll opt for a Gunfish same colors.

Stained water I like a Bone color Spook /Sexy Dawg
