flat vs V opinions needed

Featured Replies

I recently bought a 14ft x 37in flat bottom jon.  however, I have become aware of a 14ft x 40(floor) v hull aluminum boat for DIRT cheap.  Which would be less tipsy.  Both have deep sidewalls.

for me its not a tipsy issue vs the 2 but the amount of drag.....v hull has less drag alot less then a flat bottom.i think that pipsy issue would be the same but what do i know  :-/

The V-Hull would handle rough water much better.  The extra 3 inches in the width would make the boat a little more stable, assuming that you were standing the same height above the waterline and the same distance from the center-line as in the Jon.

I find flat bottoms to be more stable myself when moving around in the boat and the flats can go in much shallower water.

If fishing in water that is rough, the v-hull will give you a better ride.I don't know about stability.  I have a v-hull 14ft that I have been fishing out of for the last couple of days, it has a flat floor built in it and it is pretty stable, i stand to fish and walk from back and forth from back to front.

The flat bottom will give you more stability but not much.  The flat bottom won't take chop very well and if you are using a smaller HP motor the V will displae the water better and have less drag (as previously stated).  14 Foot boats you are only talking about inches of width so the stability difference would be minimal.

I bought a v-bottom fibergalls 14' when I was 17 and I hated it. Everytime I would move around in the boat it would wobble and I couldn't barley stand up to fish. I now own a Nitro 17' bass boat and I like the way it runs through water and the way it stays while I'm walking on it.

I've owned both types and would never go back to a V-hull. I love the stability of my 48" wide floor. Of course a V-hull takes choppy water better. But if the water's too rough, I don't go out.
