I also need help reading my fish finder

Featured Replies

I recently installed and started using a Garmin Echomap 43 on my Hobie pro angler Kayak.

This is the first and only fish finder I have ever used so it has been a learning experience.

I took these pictures of my display while fishing on a lake in the Adirondacks of NY.

There is a section on the lake where at a certain depth the it appears like a "layer" forms and is obscured by blue as seen below.

this will continue sometimes darker or lighter.

then with some clear areas.....

maybe bubbles? but that is a lot of bubbles.

Not vegetation as I have dragged lead core line thru this area without coming up with weeds.

other areas of the lake (same or similar depth) do not show this.

just curious as to what it may be?

Thanks

I believe what you are seeing is the thermocline.  This is the layer that separates the warm surface water from the cold deeper water.  Temperature drops quickly in that layer and density of water changes with the temp giving you this blue line on the screen.  It will not be there when the surface water cools and can mix with the bottom.  This mixing and transition is the fall turnover and you should be seeing it in a few weeks or so.

Really good photo of you and your fishing partner.  It says a lot.  Your son?

Definitely a thermocline about 25' and secondary echoes of the yellow bottom. The thermocline is so dense it's returning a red signal, blue is simply cold water, the straighter marks are probably trout or suspended debris indicated by no red coloration within the marks.
