Carpet replacement

Featured Replies

I was wondering how many have redone the carpet in their boats?  I have a 2007 Bass Tracker and the carpet is tearing in a few places, so was going to attempt replacing it over the winter!  My main questions are how hard is it to get the old carpet cleaned off and also what would be an alternative to carpet?  I am not sure I want to put carpet back on it!

I have done from partial to complete  recarpet jobs on several of my boats.  I just finished doing 7 box lids in my Nitro Z20.

Getting the old carpet off is easy.  Just put lacquer thinner on the carpet wait a bit then take the carpet off.  You will still have glue residue but when you put a fresh layer of glue on it will reactivate what is there.

You can’t do this in a place with a flame like a water heater or furnace or you run the risk of dying in an explosion.

An alternative to carpet is sea deck.

I've done a few of my own boats over the years. Never had any trouble just pulling up the old. I would get all that old residue off. I always used a scraper and then a grinding wheel on the lids. It's not a hard job just time consuming.  Quite rewarding thi once it's done. No clue on carpet alternatives tho. I personally love carpet.  Good luck with it

I did my Tracker TX17 about 3-4 years ago.  Taking the carpet out wasn't hard.  The difficult part was removing the old glue (I wanted a completely clean surface).  I tried acetone but it chased me out of the shop.  I wound up using an angle grinder with a wire cup brush, that went a lot faster.  It took 27' of carpet to do a 17' boat with very little waste.  Take your time and plan your cuts carefully.  I was very pleased with how mine turned out.
