Chasing deep smallmouth, part 2

Featured Replies

Since this was likely one of the last decent, dry days we may get around here this year,  I decided to try out some more deep, wintering areas for Georgian Bay smallmouth. The boat was covered in frost this morning, but once the sun came up it was pleasant, although a bit breezy.
I spent a little bit of time graphing to find fish, and once I found them it was game on!

On one very large hump about 2 acres in size that topped off at about 30’ and surrounded by over 150’ of water, I found them stacked up on the edge of a sharp drop. They were so thick that the graph was showing a false bottom at times!

For 2 hours straight, I literally caught a fish on every single drop, and didn’t move more than 50’. Nothing was over 3lbs today, but it was a blast.
Every fish came on a Berkley Maxscent Flatworm on a drop shot, and I caught fish as deep as 60’ today. Even the deeper fish still rocketed to the surface and jumped, although not quite as high as in the summer.
I just hope I can get back out a couple more times before the boat goes to bed for the winter, cause man that’s some fun stuff!

What day was that?  I went Sunday into Sag Bay and got 28, only two small, best 5 26-14, PB 6-7, and while not hot most of the time, steady big fish all day.  Some days are magic.  Too bad there are not more of them.

Unfortunately I couldn't get a partner.  I have a pic that the DNR took of a 5-7.  But I don't have a pic of the 6-7.  Remember your comment one day recently about a day when the Ned worked so well?  Most of my fish came on a tube or New Money Ned, and the 6-7 came on the Ned.  The little one.  I'll pick the picture of the 5-7 off my phone and post it.

Here are two of the first 4, the 5-7 in one hand.  The DNR came up to check me out, all OK, and they asked if i had any fish.  I said I had four, and they asked to see them.  I said I was about to release them and asked if they would take a pic.  They did and it is what you see.
