Lake Berryessa

Featured Replies

Going to be fishing a club tournament as a back seat there next week. It’s been a number of years since I’ve been to that lake. Any ideas on what to throw at this time of year would be appreciated.

I usually have a D/S and Shaky rigged on spinning gear. Would the Ned be a better choice? I have the fixin’s for it, but have never fished it.

As far as bait casters I haven’t a clue yet. Any ideas on setups for these would be helpful.

Thanks....Jo

Back seating you need to ask your boater what he is planning to fish and where.

Oh, I know that. Done it in the past, some are very forthcoming, others not so much. Even as a club we are fishing against each other which is not really a concern for me. Irregardless of the standings, I just want to get out and have fun.

I was looking for tactics and baits that work well this time of year. Try them out and see what happens.

OK, not team events but club event that the 2 anglers don't share weight. If the boater doesn't share front end operating time with the back seater then you are along for a boat ride.

Berryessa is a big lake with diversified areas to fish year around.

Finesse spinning presentations require the right type of water to fish and boat control positioning allowing you to cast to areas where bass may react to your offering and that is a team effort.

Seasonally it's late fall to winter transition and the bass are moving deeper. Deeper is relative to the area. Large flats with lots of cover the bass move into deeper breaks from 2'-4' for example to 6'-8'. Your boater may like to fish spinnerbaits, blade or crank baits without stopping the boat slow enough for you to present a finesse lure like a Ned rig for example.

Your boater may decide to fish narrows for Spotted bass working Shad schools in 30'-50' water. Structure spoons and tail spinners are your best bet. There are miles of areas inbetween the upper and lower end of Berryessa all have bass in various areas with shoreline docks and outside structure areas where jigs a good choice.

How can anyone suggest what to use when you don't know what areas you are fishing?
