So. Awhile ago I indicated in a post I was going to try my hand at making a crankbait. I finally did. It was a tense experience as I've never used an airbrush before. And, like an idiot I chose to make a more complicated one as my first.. a sort of perch.

Anyway, I made a series of videos detailing the very newbie effort but it shows all that I had to do to get started. I thought that anyone thinking of doing this the first time might benefit from my experience. There's also a webpage link to all of the materials and details about them.

Thanks... wasn't easy the first time. I did mess up on the epoxy topcoat though. I may have messed up the whole thing if it doesn't dry. Still tacky. I mixed by weight but the bottles say in tiny, tiny print. Mix by volume. grrrrr. Oh well, try again maybe.

It looks like excellent work to me. I wish I had the talent and ability to do that kind of stuff.

Take a look at my videos. I have no commercials on them. No monetary gain. I wasn't sure I could do this either. I researched a long time, made a plan, got the materials, and did it. I'll bet anyone can. You don't have to be an artist. The paint job is sort of done with tricks. It's not a freehand sort of thing like a canvas artist.

That bad boy is beautiful.  Update this post when you smack a fattie with it!

Nice going Dan, especially on the first attempt. I made two false starts at making lures (bought some tools and materials) but among time, talent and money, it never got off the ground. Your first attempt is encouraging. Enjoyed the videos. Looking forward to seeing the video of your first catch on the homebrew lure.

I'm actually half way to reproducing the bait I just made. This time with (hopefully) a good epoxy coat. Second one is going much faster. Got it sealed and right up to painting in a few hours one afternoon.

I am so intrigued by the idea of making and trying different types of baits with different paint patterns. I was a science teacher for 30 yrs, so this is almost as much that as it is the artsy stuff.

Nice work. If this is your first one, you’ve got! My first one was a disaster. I had the desire and wood working skills but not the knowledge the first time around. 
 

second time I did what you did. I’ve made flat sided and minnow type cranks and they’ve caught fish.
