Dobyns 746 vs Falcon Amistad 7 3

Featured Replies

I just bought a Dobyns 745 dx hp and I have been loving it for 3/8 and 1/2 oz jigs.  I tried a 3/4 oz football jig with a large bodied creature bait trailer, which is a bait I fish a lot offshore in summer and it seems a little underpowered.  Just getting an opinion on which rod you think may be best from whoever may have experience with either or both.  Are both of these rods relatively the same power?

Thanks.

You asked about a Dobyns  746. I have the Champion XP DC 736 FH. I use it for large frogs,EX: the 3:16 7" no bullfrog & Carolina Rigs using 3/4 & 1 oz. barrel weights. I have no problem at all using these baits. I just have not used a football jig on this rig. I feel sure it would be no problem though as this rod is a beast. I do have A couple of the Champion Extreme HP Series rods. Other than the differences that are listed on the web site, I can tell you the the extreme series is more sensitive than the XP series. I hope that helps you some.  If you have more Questions call Dobyns Rods & ask if Gary is there if is he will help, If not just tell who answer the phone you have some questions about a rod & you will get help.  I have never used a Falcon Amistad rod so I can not comet on that.

I have and fish the Amistad but have not fished the Dobyns 745 (though I do own a few DX Extreme spinning rods). The Amistad is definitely the rod for what you're asking. Check out a YT clip of Jason Christie using it on Lake St Clair cracking a tube on a 3/4 oz. head and you'll see the action. IMO 1/2 and 3/4 is right in it's wheelhouse.

I didn't know Falcon was still producing the Amistad, but I guess they're keeping that taper in the new lines.  I have one in the last generation Lowrider (red), and I've used it for 3/4 oz Carolina rigs, but never a heavy football head jig.  I liked it for that, and I actually believe 1 oz would be okay on this rod.  I mainly have used this for large hollow bodied frogs, and it's done well for that too.  I've got no experience with Dobyns.

have 745 and an amistad st. imo 745 fishes a 3/4 jig really well.  also imo 745 and amistad are pretty close in power. so may e a 746 would better suit you. my personal favorite is a 784 for 3/4 f.b. jig

The Falcon Cara Amistad is great for 1/2 and 3/4 oz.

Thanks for replies.  The new Expert Series Amistad from falcon has a much stouter tip on it than the DX745.  Probably by atleast 50%.  I am not sure if the older Cara Amistads were as stout as the new Experts are.  Going to try the DX746 and see how I like it.  Not so sure the 3/4 jigs I fish aren't closer to 7/8 and the trailer I use weighs at least a 1/4 oz so I am over an ounce easy with this setup.

I have owned many different rod brands and it seems that many companies create rods with stouter tips for the power they actually are.  Dobyns rods I have used seem to have lighter tips overall but more of the power lies from the middle to lower part of the blank.  Part of the good balance factor I would think by keeping more weight closer to the reel seat.  I am speaking specifically of fast action rods.
