Wiring my trolling motor and batteries

Featured Replies

I have been searching around an am unable to find exactly what I am looking for information and product wise. I am looking to mount my mini Kota Powerdrive v2 55lb 54" in the front of my boat (duh) and wire it to the back where my batteries will stay. Problem is, I have two boats and need removable option so I can swap the tm out every so often. Exactly what parts do I need and how do I do it. I get the part where I connect the plug to my motor, but not how I connect the other end to the battery permanently and exactly what gauge wire to buy.

For my canoe, as I unplug the TM to charge the batter, I went with this option...one receptacle (battery), two plugs (TM/Charger).

For you, I'd do two receptacles (one in each boat) and one plug (TM)

If the boat isn't wired for a TM yet, you need to run some 8-gauge wire. Ring terminals at the battery ends (crimp/shrink tube) and the receptacle at the TM ends - the plugs/receptacle come with butt-splices, you just crimp them on. I would suggest...HIGHLY...that you get a good battery box with accessory outlets. Finder plugs into one of those with one of these. Don't run the TM and the sonar off the same attachment on the battery...what the TM can handle for power-pull would fry the sonar. A good box will have separate circuit breakers for the main terminals and accessory outlets.
