No leader using braid around wood

Featured Replies

I fish braid about 95% of the time, both with and without a leader. I always use a leader around wood, when dragging jigs and t rigs over and through under water trees/lay downs. Here’s my reason. About 5 years ago I was using strait braid with a jig around two downed trees where I could see the bass. As the braid rubbed on the trees it made a noise/vibration on the trees that the bass reacted negatively to by swimming away about 5’ from the rubbing braid. I could see them chasing bait, so I tied on a 15lb leader about 7’. I watched 4 bass attack my jig (that I caught) as the flouro leader didn’t make the vibration on the wood, it just smoothly slid over it. Since that day I always use a leader around wood. I know there are lots of opinions regarding bass being non reactive to line, but I disagree. It may not be a visibility thing but a vibration thing in certain circumstances.

there can never be 100% answers, but there will always be opinions.

Everyone has their own opinion. Here in Kansas I don't use braid around wood.

The zebra mussels hang out on dead wood.

Braid does not fare well around zebra mussels.

I use braid 100%, but I also use a leader 100% of the time. Visibility, abrasion, cost, and a little bit of stretch is why I use leaders. I love braid for its sensitivity and lack of memory. I feel this gives the best of both worlds. Wood, rock, vegetation, open water, seems to work well enough for my needs.

I flip braid into wood and catch fish, but I use light weights. Light weights reduce friction so there's less noise and vibration. Still catch plenty of fish and I don't have to switch back and forth between a rod with braid and rod with flouro on lakes with lots of wood and weeds.

I hear you. Every situation reflects different circumstances. I don't  flip much, more dragging and bouncing through stuff.
