Needing help on what to add next to my rod/reel arsenal

Featured Replies

Good Morning Fellow Fisherman,

The past few weeks I have been going back and forth on what I should to do add another rod/reel to my others, since I have been so decisive I wanted to get the thoughts of y'all and maybe it can help me narrow it down better on what I should do.

My Rods/Reels Already:

1. Spinning Rod

2. 6'6" MH Rod w/ 6:4.1 Reel (Top Water, Jerk Baits, Worms, Squares/Lip)

3. 7'0" MH Rod w/ 6:8.1 Reel (Spinners/Chatters, Creature Baits, Squares/Lip)

4. 7'5" MH Rod w/ 7:3.1 Reel (Froggin/Flippin)

I am by no means a professional so I don't have down to the exactly science of what rod/reel goes best certain types but I try to do my research and do the best I can to find the right options. I've been debating on getting a crankbait rod next. It seems like my 6'6" and 7'0" are decent all around options but I want to start building up my rods/reels for certain applications year by year. But then again maybe I am wrong for wanting to get a crankbait rod. I am open for options if anyone has any input on what I should do next. I do have a budget set for this rod/reel to be around $250.00. I appreciate the help in advance.

If you want a specified crankbait rig - this is my opinion

6-speed reel: 25-28 IPT

Moderate action, medium or medium-heavy rod

My rig?

Diawa Fuego CT-H (6.3:1 - 26.3IPT)

Dobyns Fury 705CB

That'll run you just under that $250 point at retail - look for sales, look on Amazon - you can get that rig for less than retail if you're patient.

Other option? Flip/Pitch/Frog rig

8+ speed reel: 32+ IPT

Fast action, heavy rod

My current rig

Fuego CT-XS (8.1:1 33.9IPT)

Diawa Aird-X 7' H/F - looking to upgrade to Dobyns Fury 735C

Costs - same as the crankbait rig.

Others may have different opinions on brands/speeds/power-action

The Fuego CT is in my basket right now to pair with the rod that I decide to go with :)

I appreciate the feed back.

@MN Fisher just curious how does that fuego do with lighter lures say in the 1/4 oz range?

The Fuego/Fury is a new rig this year, but last year I did use my Fuego CT-XS on a heavy power rod to toss a 5/16oz hollow frog. Long as the tension and brakes are set correctly, it had no problems tossing that...so I'd say a 1/4 oz is within it's range.

I have a few Fuegos and it depends on the rod. If the rod loads up well you're good. I have mine on an older moderate action medium and it throws small crankbaits really well.
