You will lose more ned rigs than you will treble baits in my experience.  Then of course you have all the different head types and bait styles etc..so you're premise of it being a $2 bait is way off.

2$ is cheaper then 3 or 4 8 dollar baits ....a day one hook one bait and one weight  come to about 2$ bucks a ned ..
