I miss the older Shimano  Symetre reels. The kind of blue ones were super solid reels. Never had an issue with them.

Sure I had one too, a 2500 and it weighed like 9.9 oz. I think alot of the current problems are that the old ones were built like tanks and were heavy and with the obsession of reel manufacturers to keep making lighter reels they have cheaper parts and just are not as tough and durable as they use to be.

Never had any issues with any Shimano reels I have used.

 

I'm also running a lot of 500 size sedona's and sahara's during ice fishing season.

 

But at the end of the day I do prefer my reels that are made in Japan by Shimano and Daiwa.

That and the lighter weight makes every little tick more noticeable. I say this all the time about the baitcasters too. 

My friend who repairs rods and reels tells me to bring all new reels to him to remove the old grease and replace it with new grease.

 

He says we have no idea of how long the reel has been on the shelf and sometimes part or all of the grease dries up.
