I'm getting as spinning rod/reel for the first time.  I've never thrown one before but I guess its time to learn.  I want one setup that I can use for dropshot and shaky head.  My local sports store is partial to Lews and Abu Garcia so I'll probably be getting one of those.  Most of my fishing is in heavy cover. I don't want to buy a cheap rig, and I don't want the most expensive out there either.  Any suggestions on 1 rod/reel setup that can do both needs?  Thanks for your help.

I normally wouldn't want to be fishing these techniques on the same rod as I generally like a M for shaky heads and a ML for dropshot. A good medium rod can work for both though, but you'll have to back off the drag with the drop shot. Anywhere around 7" is the length you are probably looking at. A 2500 size reel would be my preference with 10-15 lb braid mainline and a 6-10 lb fluoro or mono leader. Lews and Abu are solid companies that make pretty nice rods, but knowing what to recommend really depends on your own personal price point. The most light and sensitive rod you can afford is what I would recommend for these light line techniques.

If you'd like specific recommendations, I would suggest offering a budget range, with the upper number being fairly rigid. Every time you up the budget by $20 to $30, the choices expand and get better.

If you're stuck on Abu - then here's my suggestion.

 

Revo-X reel - size 30

Veritas rod - 7' Medium power

 

My personal choice?

Pflueger Supreme - 30 or 35

Dobyns Fury 703SF - 7' Medium power

 

Both rigs put you right in that ballpark.

Fenwick HMG, with a Diawa BG 1500 loaded up with 15lbs 832. 

 

All that sets you back, maybe $200 and that includes the 832

Some good suggestions above. Going braid to leader in spinning was one of the best suggestions that i wish i didn't put off so long. The ease of handling and improved sensitivity not to mention better long distance hook sets was dramatic to me. I actually like my 3000 size reel the best and if you go braid get a good 8 strand braid like suffix 832 for example. It casts much better. Specific suggestion..St. Croix mojo bass 7'1" medium, shimano nasci 3000 size.

A Lew’s Custom Black combo will run you about $190 and it should handle a dropshot in the conditions you mention.
