Help needed for bass setup

Featured Replies

Hi there. Hoping to get some advice from the board here.

I fished a lot growing up back in Scotland. Perch, roach and pike mainly although did do some trout fly fishing. That was 25 years ago. My daughter recently expressed an interest in fishing so i grabbed a couple of ugly stik elite rods on sale and paired them with some okuma avenger abf30 reels. Put 4lb mono on one and 6lb on the other.

We’ve been catching some rainbow trout at local stocked water in NJ (Just releasing them) and I have quickly fallen back in love with fishing.

Would love to do some bass fishing and picked up a Daiwa BG2500 reel which should arrive next week.

My question was on what rod to pair it with. Was thinking either a Bass X, Dobyns Fury or Daiwa Tatuma but not sure which one or which model to get.

Have been reading up on the different rigs so was planning on using some senkos and Texas / wacky rigging and maybe some crankbaits etc.

Also, what line should I put on the BG2500 reel??

Any other advice for a new bass fisherman would be great and appreciated!

Thanks in advance. Hope everyone is staying safe.

Cheers

Any of the rods you listed will be fine. Brand and models are personal preference. Every one has their opinion, and it's just that, opinion.

A 7ft-ish medium heavy will probably be your best bet to start with. It's the Swiss army knife of bass fishing. Handles most techniques and baits at least fairly well.

10-12 lb line should also handle most baits you'd throw with that rod, and most situations you'll be fishing in.

Thanks! Would I use mono, fluoro or braid? I have mono on the others but not sure if bass setup requires something different or again just down to personal preference.

i'd go for a dobyns fury FR703SF (7' medium fast action) for your senko's and light texas rigs. pair it with some 8-10lb test fluoro and you're good to go.

i personally use 15lb braid with a 8-10lb leader on all of my spinning setups, but if you're feeling confident and want to learn how to tie some very useful knots, you can try that too! plenty of youtube videos to guide you in the right direction on how to do that. good luck!

I would also go Dobyns Fury out of those 3. Bass X next. 7’ medium fast or medium heavy fast. I personally think the fury and pretty close to top of the pack at that price point. I have a fury that I use along side a lews tp1 black, kistler argon and shimano expride and it still holds it’s own for me. 8-10 lb fluoro is nice. If you’re sticking to senkos, T rigs and a little cranking then the medium is probably good.

Yeah, personal preference. Most are probably in either the fluorocarbon or braid to leader camps.

Use the search bar up top and do a little bit of reading on the line types, and you should be able to make a decision pretty quick based on your needs. Then try it out. If it doesn't work for you, line is cheap!
