Need rod tip top size

Featured Replies

Hey all,

first, if not in the right place please move and my apologies.
Pilot error broke the very tip of my brand new St. Croix BassX (6’8” xf)

(photo for reference)

3 weeks of trying to contact St. Croix hasn’t proved successful so figured I’d check here. Rod broke only 1” from the very tip. Figured I could eliminate the next guide and re- tip (yeah the purists will want to kill me but the cost of warranty and shipping will be nearly what I paid for it) and with the current world situation I suspect StCroix is closed anyway since they won’t respond to multiple requests.

I don’t have access to any good calipers so would anyone actually know the size of a replacement tip for this sucker?

Thanks in advance

Jim

The taper will require a size or two up from whatever it was. Take it into an auto zone of something and they’ll measure it for you. Tops are sized in 64ths of an inch. (5=5/64 etc. ) sometimes they list the mm equivalent too.

The reason you can't get Croix on the horn is they are currently closed.  If you purchase the shipping label on St. Croix's website, it is a substantial savings.  I think it was $15 last time I sent a rod back

Looking at the condition of the tip top I'd say you have no warranty claim, since it's their low end rod made in Mexico, I'd just buy another if you like it. The tip being cut that far back is going to affect the tip's performance quite a bit. That said I see no SC II blank with that spec in my catalogs. The SC III blank is listed as a 4.5 tip, the SCV blank a 4.0 tip, best guess would be a 5.0 at least, why don't you just remove the blank out of the old tip top, try it, if it fits measure it, strangely drill bits are sized in 1/64th inch increments.

A little late here, but remove it from the broken part and see if it fits the blank.
