Hung Up on My Own Baitcaster

Featured Replies

Total noob question.  I've only used a baitcaster for a season and love it, but any time I want to pop the rod or jump a jig my slack line is getting caught on the last 1-2 eyes of my rod.  Gotta stop everything and undo it with my hands most of the time.

Is this common and a technique problem?  I've searched high and low for the solution and haven't found a thing.

I'm guessing your using braid, it happens.

Rarely happens to me but I don’t fish braid much. Wind, line type, and the way you “pop” the rod all play a factor

It's really annoying when it happens, I just try to keep a semi tight line whenever I can,

Happens to me aswell, just keep an eye on your line and rod tip. Dont wanna set the hook like that that's for sure!!

Lots of people swear by Power Pro. I personally enjoy using Grand Slam by Hi Seas. I use 20 lb test on my spinning reels and then use a 8 or 10 lb. fluorocarbon leader. I rarely use braid on bait casting gear, but when I do I normally go with 50 lb.

Tip wrap can happen with braid especially soft and smaller braid. Most of the time right after cast, air hook set, snap lure out of weed etc. If you get tip wrap while working the lure meaning you fish it wrong, too big of a pop, lower your rod tip too fast, too much of slack between jump, etc. Changing line might help but improve your technique is better and you don’t want slack line on braid.
