Confused?-Need Help On Rod and Reel Selection

Featured Replies

I am getting back into fishing after a long hibernation from the sport.  A couple of months ago I purchased a kayak to fish the rivers of central Texas and an occasional trip to fish the saltwater costal bays around Padre Island. My current set up on rods and reels is as follows:

  • St. Croix 6'6 M Power and F Action Avid Spinning Rod with a Shimano Stradic 3000 FJ
  • St Croix 7"1 MH Power and F Action Mojo Casting Rod with a Shimano Curado 200HGK (7:4:1-31' retrieve per crank)

I am wanting to add another casting rod and reel. I would like another Mojo Rod and Curado K or DC reel.  I would like help deciding on what length, power and action of a rod would be best for river fishing for bass to round out my other rods and cover most of the river fishing bait bases. I am also needing advice for the reel and whether I should get a 6:2:1, 8:5:1, or another 7:4:1 gear ratio.

Back in the old days it was just not this complicated.

Thanks for the assistance.

That's a pretty nice setup to start with. I would suggest maybe getting something with a moderate or mod fast action and pairing it with a 6:2:1 reel to sort of cover all your bases. MH or M power and you can use it for a bunch of different things like cranking etc. I'm not familiar with kayak fishing all that much but adding a rod like that will certainly round off your setup pretty well.

I don't kayak, but I would think a 6'6" m might be a little easier to cast.
