Another Rod Selection Thread

Featured Replies

Right now i have a Dobyns Champion XP 702. It doesn't feel that sensitive when using light jigs and worms.  I know it's probably not the best rod for this, but I only have 3 rods and this is my best one. But I'm looking for a more sensitive rod. I was looking at the St. Croix Legend Tour and the Expride.

Just an general purpose rod, light jigs, worms. I like shorter rods, because I fish the bank, sometimes with bushes and trees around me. Would either of these rods be more sensitive than my Dobyns? Or if someone else has a better suggestion around the same price point?

Thanks.

I can only regurgitate what I've read (rods are beyond my price point :().  Many feel the Expride is the best in its price range...or even up to $400.  The Villain 2.0 got an Editor's Choice Award from TT.  They were impressed with its sensitivity and versatility.  Both can be had in 6'10" if looking for similar specs to your Dobyns.

If your looking for a rod about 150 ish  and decent I fish the fenwick elite tech mlxf and for flukes, 4" weightless worms and the like its great.  The handle is awsome and balances well with a 2000 series reel.

My buddy has a Champ XP and I have an Expride. I love Dobyns and the Champ is a great rod. I’ve been considering getting one myself. With that being said, my buddy and I have swapped rods back and forth to try out and compare and we both came to the same conclusion. The Expride just wins. As another member already said, there are a lot of people that strongly feel that the Expride plays in a league with $400 rods and fully agree. I don’t have a ton of St. Croix experience but I know they have some great rods too. I just love the Expride. If you can afford it comfortably, I would definitely go that route.

I have an Expride and it's a nice rod. Definitely strong performer for the price. Also some sub 7' options.

If you can swing just a little more cheese, the new ALX Enox rods are mean. I have a BMJ and I am surprised by the sensitivity and versatility of the rod.
