PierPoint Landing setup

Featured Replies

So I am going on a group trip to PierPoint Landing. Has anyone fished here before? If so can you let me know what type of Rod setup I would need for this? My friend is telling me a rod rated for 20-50 lbs or 30-80 lbs but that kind of sounds like overkill to me. I wont be doing this type of fishing much, was hoping I could grab a swimbait rod, and use it for occasional trips like this.

Yesterday's fish count only had yellowtail on the overnight boats. Nothing caught on any of the other boats would require more than 20 lb test IMHO.

There should be rental available for you at the port. Call them up and find out if you don’t want to invest in Saltwater gear. Charter boat normally would be crowded, a lot of tangle especially for those use lighter gear. There gonna be a lot of boat flip, thinking flipping 3-10lb fish over 5-10’ boat. Do you plan to cast iron?

Rent a rod and take hooks and weights appropriate for the live bait they bait being used. Call and ask what terminal tackle is needed and where they the plans to go for what species.

yeah figured best thing to do would be to call and ask.

probably just live line...i havent fished like this since i was a kid. i can recall catching barracuda on lures but cant remember what kind. i also recall loosing a bunch to line snap cause we were expected to pull them in ourself.

do you think 10ft rod is too big?

The boat has rent rods with reels filled with appropriate line. You heard of Izor line? Russ Izor's boat 1st String was out of Pier Point landing.

3/4 day boats usually fish the Horse Shoe kelp area out of San Perdo. With water temps in the mid 50's don't expect any surface bite. Dropper rigs or sliding sinker rigs for halibut and other deeper water fish is more then likely.

All day boats usually go to Catalina island with more choices of fish to target.
