Guides flaking

Featured Replies

I’ve got an old Powell endurance that I’ve had for close to 10 years that I really like.   the epoxy around all of the guides is flaking.   I’m trying to determine what to do to fix it.  Do I need to replace the guides?   Any help appreciated.

I don't think there is a fix other than removing and rewrapping.  If you do that you might want to update the guides.

But , if you want to try a less drastic approach, pick off the loose stuff and put a coat or two of rod wrap epoxy on.  Won't look great, but I think it would hold the guides well as long as the thread is not damaged.

Perhaps consider this ~

I have fixed this issue before by sanding the area to remove all flakes and then coating with devcon 2 ton epoxy

That will seal them, but thread wrap epoxy (actually a casting resin) levels better, doesn't yellow as quickly and is much clearer than adhesive epoxies.

I disagree that devcon will yellow. I have fixed many rods this way and also have a ton of custom made cranks that are coated in it and it does not yellow on those either. Cheap epoxy yes I agree it will yellow and become compromised very quick in the elements

A lot of offshore rods are no longer using epoxy finish. Hear it's a UV curing finish, it has a history of doing what your rod looks like after some time.
