Tatula casting rod

Featured Replies

Hello,

Just starting to get in to fishing seriously and reading these forums has been amazing so thank you everyone.

I am looking at a tatula rod to pair with a new tatula 150 reel I just bought. I've already got a medium heavy tatula xt rod that I've paired with a tatula ct so I'm ideally looking for a heavy rod to round out my gear. I'm comparing the tat711hfb and the tat741hfb. The tat741hfb is listed as a frog rod although other than the extra 3 inches there doesnt appear to be much difference in specs. The Daiwa website has wrong info on the 711hfb btw. Although I am looking at using it for frogging as well as other applications, am I missing something between the two or would both work for multiple applications including frogging? Any guidance is much appreciated!

I have a few Tat rods, and the 711HFB is one of my faves. It's a solid jig skipping and pitching rod. Action is right on the money for that. I always keep a jig tied onto it, but I'd have no problem pulling frogs with it.  Although they are listed the same, I believe the "frog" rod is a little heavier.

Even though I'm 6'5", I don't really prefer longer rods for pitching. However, if that wasn't the case, and If I was ONLY planning on pitching jigs and tossing frogs, the 7'4 might be a good choice.

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like you're saying the 711 might be the better all purpose option if it's not going to be a sole frogging rod?

I don't own the frog rod, so I can't say 100%.

But the 7'1" is probably more versatile.

I have the 7’2 heavy and 7’4 heavy frog. They are the original ones. My opinion is the 7’4 all the way out of the two. The 7’2 is my jig rod and the 7’4 is my frog rod but it was also my gig and big spinnerbait rod before I found the 7’2. I wish I had found the 7’4 but I couldn’t find one I like the original ones.

I have both rods, the 7'1" is one of my favorites in the line up (it is paired with a Tatula CT Type R).  I use it for all kinds of stuff, even smaller glide baits (S-waver 120).  I have only used the 7'4" for frogging and it excels at that job.  It could do jigs, t-rigs, etc, but I like the 7'1" for those techniques more.

I'm looking at basically the same thing. My priorities would be 1. hollow body frogs 2. flipping jigs and beavers into brush and grass edges 3. light punching grass (1/2-3/4 oz. probably). My dilemma is while I would like to use it to fish mainly frogs, I think I will have a lot more opportunity to flip into brush. This will be my only heavy rod for a little while. Would you choose the 7'1" still? Then in a couple of years get a dedicated frog rod? Or would you go with the 7'4" first for all of it, then get a dedicated jig rod later? Interested since you have experience with both. I have the 6'10 MH in this line and absolutely love it for my main all around rod.

Since you own both is there a big difference in the overall strength and sensitivity of the two rods? I ask because spec wise they're almost identical other than 3". Have you used the 7'1" for frogging or do you think it would work with small to medium frogs?

Thanks for everyone's replies, appreciate the feedback.

If your priority is frogging, I would get the 7'4".  I use it for punching too.  It really is a nice frog rod.

They are very similar.  The 7'4" gives you more leverage.  Both are pretty darn sensitive.  The 7'1" is one of my favorite all around rods along with the 6'10" MH.

If you think you love the 6'10.... don't ever try the 7'3. ;)

I don't want to speak for Tizi, but the 7'1" will certainly work for hollow body frogs. That rod has a strong backbone.

Whether you need the extra few inches is purely personal preference.

Thanks! I'm leaning towards the 7'1" because it will get used in a mix of boat and fishing kayak. Trying to keep things slightly shorter for that reason. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't shooting myself in the foot long term.

It will work for frogging for sure.  It does have nice backbone and tip.  It should walk a frog easily.

Specs on website show the 7'1 as 1/4-1 oz lures. I'm guessing that is the wrong info OP stated. What is the actual lure rating? I'm guessing it goes to at least 1 1/2 oz.

Awesome thanks, exactly what I was hoping to hear.

Sucks hearing you guys praise the 6'10" so much. I originally was going to get that for my MH but when I got to the local store someone had beat me to it by a few hours. Ended up getting the tat XT 7'3" MH. Haven't had a chance to try it out yet but hopefully still decent.

Don’t sweat it, that 7’3” will be an awesome rod.

I have several XTs too, very good for the money.  I have the ML and MH cranking rods, flipping stick, and M spinning.  Very happy with them.  The split grips are nice for certain applications.

Are you referring to the heavy Tatula rod with the cork handle?

I've been thinking of it for frogs and maybe an S-Waver 168. Think it would handle these?

Well, before this week Daiwa didn't even have the 711 listed on their website. I emailed their customer service last weekend asking if it was discontinued or why it was missing. Instead of replying to my email they added it on Tuesday or Wednesday but put the wrong specs lol.

Thanks for all the help ammo and tizi. I've got the 7'1" on hold to pick up tomorrow. Also good to know I didn't make a mistake on the xt!

If you don’t mind, post what the lure rating says on the rod when you get it.

Sportsman"s Outfitters has the 6' 10" MHF for $110.  28 rods left.

Thanks, I've actually checked their website out for a few things. I'm in Canada so unfortunately I get to pay a lot more for the same gear up here. By the time I add exchange and duties from sportsman's it works out to about what I'd pay here so I just buy here to avoid the hassle in case there are any issues.

That sucks.  I can't remember what I paid for my 6'10" MHF, but the most I ever paid for any of my other original Tatulas was $100 for the used 7'4" HF.  Others were purchased new for less than $100.  Can't find those deals anymore.  :(
