MH Expride rated 3/8 - 1oz, terrible to toss 1.25 oz lure?

Featured Replies

Hello,

I only have 1 bait casting setup. I got it earlier this year and LOVE it. It is a MH 7' 2" Expride rated 3/8 - 1 oz.

I recently acquired a couple swimbaits I really want to try out. They are MegaBasss MagDraft 6in. They are 1 1/4oz. I planned on giving an easy lofted toss, but wanted to see what everything thinks throwing something 1/4oz over the weight listed. I wouldn't be throwing them daily, jsut to try out, to see how I like them

I was thinking of getting a legit swimbait setup in time. Or should I just go grad a cheap Heavy set up for these? (Cheap as in $100 max)

Thoughts? Thanks!

I think you will be fine... I've thrown 3oz swim baits on my frog rod.... and that's almost double... just see how it feels.  Theres alot of affordable swimbait rods out there...

I agree with Teal, it's not really accurate to go by the listed ratings. Some rods can handle a lot more than the listed weight. But don't go swinging for the fence on the first cast. Do a gentle lob cast to see how much the rod bends. You'll be able to get a feel of whether the lure exceeds the rod's limits. My bet would be that your rod can handle the extra .25 oz.

Lob cast is all I was planning on doing with it. I just didnt see the sense in getting a new rod to use these here and there.

Appreciate the feedback. From my understand the weight limits are all about how you cast, correct?

Yup, if you have the right technique, you can throw additional weight (up to a limit) safely.

+1 with the casting technique trial & error plus you're throwing a moving bait with a treble hook... should definitely be good to go.

You will be OK.

Bruh,

Declining the excuse to acquire a new rod when the opportunity presents itself?  You’re monkey ? must be dormant or the dark side force users on this site are slacking, lol.

There is a slight chance the rod might feel overtaxed but given the .25 overage,  You should be fine. Only one way to find out. Give it a go.

Oh the monkey has been in FULL SWING recently haha. Maybe that's why I'm debating it. Last night I went from checking out some lures to having a Scorpion DC in my cart when I dont even have a 2nd casting rod. Didnt pull trigger yet but she's sitting in there ?

That’s more like it. I’ve been in that position many times. Just having fun with this. For some reason, I enjoy it when fellow anglers here go through this process to determine whether or not to add more gear to their arsenals. ?
